VTX Telecom taps Enablence for broadband stimulus project
JANUARY 18, 2011 -- Enablence Technologies Inc. (TSX: ENA-V) says that VTX Telecom LLC (VTXT), a subsidiary of Valley Telephone Cooperative Inc. (VTCI), will deploy Enablence platforms to construct a fiber-based network throughout the southern region of Texas. VTX Telecom was one of the U.S. broadband stimulus funding recipients.“VTX Telecom is proud to be part of the U.S. broadband stimulus incentive that will bring high-speed communications services to previously underserved regions of Texas. We have selected Enablence solutions to help us achieve our goals quickly and cost-effectively,” said Dave Osborn, general manager of VTX Telecom and CEO of parent company VCTI. “Valley Telephone has enjoyed a long relationship with Enablence as the first CLEC in South Texas to offer fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) using their robust, scalable products. We look forward to continuing this partnership with VTX Telecom as we implement the next phase of our network.”VCTI and VTX Telecom offer a full range of telecommunications services -- voice, data, and video -- in 18 exchanges, covering approximately 7,300 square miles and touching 19 counties in South Texas. Valley selected the Enablence platform because of its ability to scale quickly, its cost-effectiveness, and the reliability of its products, Enablence asserts.

Finland’s SSP Yhtiöt Oy buys GPON gear from Alcatel-Lucent
JANUARY 10, 2011 -- SSP Yhtiöt Oy, part of the Finnet Group, has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON technology as part of its effort to fulfill the Finnish government’s goal of providing 100-Mbps services to 98% of Finland’s households by the end of 2015.The Finnet Group comprises 28 small and mid-sized telecom service providers across Finland.Under a three-year frame agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will provide its GPON-based IP access platform, and its portfolio of customer premises equipment. According to Alcatel-Lucent, SSP chose GPON because of its operational cost savings due to its passive (maintenance-free) outside plant, shorter repair times when fiber cables are damaged, easier network design, and redundancy closer to the end-customer.Said Pekka Granlund, planning manager at SSP, “Following a thorough study of the technologies and solutions that are available on the market today, we selected Alcatel-Lucent -- as it clearly has the most future-safe GPON platform. Alcatel- Lucent’s products and services provide us with the flexibility we need, giving us the competitive edge we require to be successful in this market.”

Clearwave Communications selects Calix gear for middle-mile BTOP broadband stimulus project
JANUARY 6, 2010 -- Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says that Clearwave Communications has selected equipment from the Calix Unified Access portfolio for The Southern Illinois Broadband Opportunities Partnership Project, a middle-mile network designed to help bring advanced broadband services to 23 counties in southern Illinois. The project earned broadband stimulus funding via the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP).The Clearwave broadband stimulus award consists of more than $45 million in overall funds, including a $31.5 million federal grant, an $11.3 million grant from the State of Illinois, a $400 thousand grant from the Counties of Southern Illinois, and $2.1 million in private investment. The Southern Illinois Broadband Opportunities Partnership Project will leverage 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), point-to-point Gigabit Ethernet, and gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology to bring fiber services to more than 232 anchor institutions, and facilitate broadband services to approximately 300,000 households and 55,000 businesses. The network will provide broadband speeds from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps.“Despite a wealth of talent and resources, Southern Illinois has lacked a widespread competitive broadband infrastructure to stimulate economic growth and new jobs,“ said Scott Riggs, president and founder of Clearwave. “This project will provide world-class broadband connectivity to community institutions throughout the region, and the foundation for advanced broadband services to all of its businesses and citizens.”Clearwave will deploy a mix of Ethernet extensible architecture (EXA) Powered Calix platforms, including the Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP) and E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP). Clearwave will be upgrading many of its existing C7 MSAPs to facilitate the deployment of new services in its existing network, and leveraging the modularity of the E7-2 for network growth outside of its existing footprint. Clearwave will deploy both platforms in combination with Calix 700GX/GbE ONTs, capable of auto-detecting both GPON and Gigabit Ethernet services and delivering full line rate symmetrical Gigabit Ethernet services across both technologies. With today’s announcement, aggregate Calix vendor selections by broadband stimulus winners for “last mile” and “middle mile” awards has now reached 21 different projects representing approximately $270 million in stimulus-related grants, loans, and private investment for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.
