Oclaro concludes fiscal 2012, sees flat market in second half
Optical components and subsystems vendor Oclaro, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR) reported a sequential increase in revenues for the fourth quarter of 2012, but an overall year-on-year decline for fiscal 2012. Looking forward to the start of its upcoming fiscal year, marked by the recently completed merger with Opnext, Chairman and CEO Alain Couder told analysts who participated in a conference call July 31 that demand for the company’s products won’t be as robust in the second half of 2012 as he initially anticipated.Fourth quarter revenues came in at $104.4 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012, an improvement over the $88.7 million the company saw in the third quarter. GAAP gross margin was 21% for the fourth quarter, versus 15% in the third quarter of fiscal 2012.Oclaro came out of the quarter with a GAAP operating loss of $4.0 million. This figure included approximately $11.7 million of gain on the sale of assets previously held for sale and $3.4 million of net Thailand flood-related income from insurance advances, net of additional write-offs and expenses. The figure represented an improvement over the third quarter, which saw a GAAP operating loss of $15.9 million, which included $3.3 million of net flood-related income."Our results for the fiscal fourth quarter were in line with our previously announced guidance ranges," said Couder via a press release. "With the close of our merger with Opnext, we are well positioned as the #2 player in the optical components, modules and subsystems market. Customer feedback on the merger is very positive. Moving forward we are focused on accelerating the synergies of our combined business and capitalizing on the strengths of our customer relationships, comprehensive product portfolio and technologies, which we will discuss in detail during our quarterly conference call later today."For fiscal 2012, revenues were $385.5 million, less than the $466.5 million earned in fiscal 2011. GAAP gross margin of 18% for fiscal 2012 also was off compared to the 27% of fiscal 2011. GAAP operating loss was $63.8 million for fiscal 2012, almost twice the GAAP operating loss of $33.6 million in fiscal 2011. The company cited the effects of the flooding at its contract manufacturer, Fabrinet, last fall as a major contributor to the down year.Looking ahead to the first quarter of fiscal 2013, and the first quarter of the its efforts to integrate the Opnext assets, management forecasted revenues in the range of $154 million to $168 million, non-GAAP gross margin in the range of 17% to 21%, and adjusted EBITDA in the range of negative $17.0 million to negative $8.0 million.“The market relative for the second half of 2012 is weaker than we announced in the merger in March,” Couder explained on the call. “And basically if you look at the market data, you could look at it as a flat market with the first half of 2012.” Couder said the company would step up its efforts to realize cost savings from the merger with Opnext to balance the market headwinds.

Zurich strings Datwyler cabling systems in city data centers
The City of Zurich is using fiber-optic and copper cabling systems from Datwyler in the conversion and construction of its data centers, the cabling supplier has announced. Contractor TurnKey Communications AG is deploying the “largely pre-assembled” cables in two data centers. The total number of links is around 10,000, Datwyler estimates. As part of a standardization and consolidation initiative, the city’s Zurich Organisation and Informatics (OIZ) group has built a second data center in the metropolitan area, in the industrial area of Hagenholz, to create redundant resources in parallel with those for the existing data center in Albisrieden. Maréchaux Elektro AG won the cabling contract for the two data centers in August of last year. The company in turn tasked TurnKey Communication perform the planning work and actual cabling work.Turnkey collaborated with Datwyler in selecting the cables. The fiber-optic system, which Datwyler recently developed, offers a modularly expandable approach while supporting up to 96 fibers per rack unit. It is based on sub-racks fitted with pre-assembled slide-in cassettes. On the back of each cassette are two MTP couplers, and they are cabled with MTP mini-trunks. At the front, the cassettes provide OIZ with 12 LC Duplex or E2000 connections as required. The fiber-optic trunk variants include trunks with 12, 24, 48, 72, or 144 fibers pre-assembled with MTP, LC Duplex, or E2000 connectors. In the central distribution racks the mini-trunks – almost all of them with bend-optimized OM3 multimode fibers – align with 1,500 fiber-optic modules in 270 sub-racks in 4U (including patch management tray) and in the server racks in 210 fiber-optic panels within 1U.The 10G-capable copper cabling installed in parallel consists of Category 7 type CU 7702 4P data cables and IEC Standard-compliant Cat. 6a RJ-45 modules, pre-assembled to one end. The other end was terminated on-site. For the termination of the copper cables Datwyler supplied 135 3U sub-racks with 1160 modular six-port front panels and 285 1U panels with 24 ports.Datwyler also supplied 13,300 fiber-optic duplex and 9100 copper patch cables for the connection of active devices.Acceptance testing of more than 14,000 links in total was carried out on completion of each construction phase, most recently in Spring 2012.“The cabling installed in our data centers is a really top quality and comparatively economical system solution which will reliably transmit all our future applications,” comments Patrick Eggeler, Manager of Data Centre New Buildings & Operation at OIZ. “It was flawlessly implemented and handed over on time. We are also very satisfied with the planning support by TurnKey and Datwyler, and with the services rendered in relation to the installation.”

Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that iTV-3, is deploying the access equipment developer’s MXK platform as part of a new fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network to serve the communities of Morton and Pekin in Central Illinois. The new network will pass more than 15,000 homes to support the provision of triple-play services."Fiber is critical to our new offering, allowing us to keep up with consumer demand for increased internet speed for streaming of movies or downloading other high bandwidth content," said Levi Dinkla, vice president of iTV-3. "The flexibility and scalability of the MXK platform and its ability to provide GPON connectivity were main reasons Zhone was selected for this deployment. Its ability to integrate with current systems and provide a smooth implementation for the network expansion was also key."In addition to its MXK central office system, Zhone also will supply its zNID Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) for both residential and business services support."This new fiber network allows iTV-3 to expand its offering and provide advanced communications and connectivity to residents in Central Illinois, with the potential to expand its footprint in the future," explained Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone.Zhone says more than 3,000 of its MXK platforms are installed with more than 150 service providers in more than 40 countries.
