Hittite offers clock divider and delay management IC
MMIC-based chip vendor Hittite Microwave Corp. has expanded its clocks and timing line with the HMC988LP3E clock divider and delay management IC.The HMC988LP3E clock divider and delay management IC is designed to provide user-selectable divider and phase adjust functions with best-in-class phase noise performance and rise and fall times, Hittite asserts. It accepts clock signals as high as 4 GHz and divides them by 1/2/4/8/16 and /32. The device is targeted at data converter (ADC/DAC) sample clock phase alignment and backplane clock skew management functions for such applications as networking, broadband, fiber-optic communications, cellular infrastructure, and test and measurement equipment. The clock divider and delay management IC offers both coarse and fine delay phase-adjustment modes. Coarse adjustment enables delay settings in increments of one half-period of the input signal in any number of desired total increments. The fine delay adjustment, which works up to 1-GHz output frequencies, offers output phase control with 20-ps resolution in 60 steps. This feature particularly can benefit test and measurement and clock recovery applications.Additional timing functions include clock synchronization, clock invert, and clock slip options, which provide a wide variety of phase control for data converter sample clocks. The HMC988LP3E features a standard differential LVPECL output and an input that designers can optimize for LVPECL, LVDS, CML, or CMOS signals. The device also features an optional on-chip power supply regulator with 85-dB PSRR. This feature improves performance in noisier power supply conditions and helps reduce power supply filtering requirements, according to Hittite. The phase noise floor of -170dBc/Hz, 80-ps rise and fall times, and 20-ps phase adjustment resolution minimize the effects of aperture jitter in such applications as driving ADCs, DACs, and sample and hold amplifiers, Hittite says.Up to 8 addressable HMC988LP3E devices can be used together on a SPI bus, and each device operates from a +3.3-V supply or a +5-V supply if the optional on-chip regulator is used. The lowest power supply current configuration of the HMC988LP3E draws 68 mA of supply current under typical conditions. It is housed in a 3x3-mm SMT QFN package.Samples and evaluation PC boards for all SMT packaged products are available from stock.

MTG acquires Swedish FTTH open access communications operator
International broadcaster Modern Times Group MTG AB (STO:MTGA)(STO:MTGB)(publ.) has agreed to acquire Swedish open access network operator Zitius Service Delivery AB from Quadracom AB for an undisclosed amount in cash. The agreement calls for MTG to acquire 80% of Zitius now and the remaining 20% in 2016.Zitius, established in 2003, operates an open access FTTH network that passes approximately 150,000 homes. More than a third of these potential subscribers currently receive a service via the Zitius network. It has multi-year agreements with such infrastructure owners as local Swedish councils and real estate organizations.Zitius provides network management and service packaging services. It installs, owns, and operates the active network equipment including routers and switches. However, it typically does not operate customer premises equipment.Zitius has agreements with a broad range of third party providers of telephony, data, and TV services, including MTG’s Viasat Broadcasting.Zitius generated pro forma revenues of SEK 96 million ($14 million) for the full year 2011, with SEK 14 million ($2.06 million) of EBITDA and an EBIT of SEK 6 million ($0.8 million) adjusted for non-recurring items. Pro forma capex for 2011 was SEK 10 million ($1.47 million). The company generated pro forma sales of SEK 66 million ($9.69 million) for the first six months of 2012, with an EBITDA of SEK 20 million ($2.94 million) and an EBIT of SEK 12 million ($1.76 million). Capex for the first half of 2012 amounted to SEK 14 million ($2.05 million).Hans-Holger Albrecht, president and CEO of MTG, commented, “The acquisition of Sweden’s number one operator of open access broadband networks reflects our commitment to invest in and support the roll-out of high-speed platforms that broaden the availability and increase the consumption of our content. Video is the primary driver of Internet traffic and that demand is only growing. Zitius is a high-growth market leader in a fast-growing segment that also delivers attractive profitability levels. Our intention is to strengthen Zitius’ market-leading position even further, and to continue providing attractive offerings to customers from multiple suppliers in an open environment. We will continue to market our own Viasat channels and Viaplay service to consumers through as many platforms as possible.”

Seaborn Networks Seabras-1 submarine cable to connect New York City with Sao Paulo
Seaborn Networks says that its previously announced Seabras-1 submarine cable system between Brazil and the U.S. will land in the New York metropolitan area. The new U.S. landing point will position the undersea cable system to link the commercial and financial centers of the two countries. In addition to the New York landing site, the 32-Tbps Seabras-1 submarine fiber-optic cable system will connect directly to a landing station in Sao Paulo. The submarine cable system also will have a branch that lands in Fortaleza, Brazil.Scheduled for activation in 2014, Seabras-1 will provide PoP-to-PoP capacity, with plans to make available a route from all three of its landings to the NAP of the Americas and other PoPs in Miami. The direct route between Sao Paulo and New York offers several advantages, Seaborn Networks asserts:low latency, on the order of 104 ms for PoP-to-PoP service between the two end points  a shorter distance to most of the Mid-Atlantic region of the US than a landing in Miami lower costs onward connectivity to rest of world because of New York’s international gateway capabilities  more reliable connections than existing US – Brazil systems, who operated more than 2.3X the number of active elements in their networks  improved route diversity with no dependencies on hurricane-prone Florida."The decision to land in the New York metropolitan area instead of Miami is in response to significant customer demand,” said Larry Schwartz, Seaborn Networks’ CEO. “By offering improvements to latency, onward connectivity, and reliability, Seabras-1 is a compelling choice for carriers, content providers, governments, and others that value a direct, low-latency route between the commercial and financial centers of Brazil and the United States.”
