Champion ONE offers Next Day Dense Wave DWDM 10G XFP transceivers
Third-party optical transceiver company Champion ONE has announced the immediate availability of its new Next Day Dense Wave (NDDW) 10G XFP optical transceiver product line. As the name implies, the NDDW line features next-day delivery from Champion ONE, which the company says enables service providers to turn up DWDM services quickly, rather than waiting 8 to 12 weeks for transceivers to be delivered. The NDDW XFP MSA compliant modules are available in all of the standard ITU C-Band 50-GHz wavelengths. (While the transceivers are tunable, Champion ONE will deliver each module tuned to the requested wavelength. This helps customers who don’t have their own tuning equipment, according to a company source.) Targeted at metro Ethernet, mobile backhaul, and long-haul applications, the transceivers will support 10-Gigabit Ethernet transmission for LAN and WAN, SONET OC-192, and 10G Fibre Channel. They also support FEC (if enabled by the port). The hot-pluggable XFP transceivers also feature digital diagnostics (DD), also known as digital optical monitoring (DOM). Network operators therefore can monitor real-time parameters of the XFPs, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.“Being able to turn up a DWDM circuit in a timely manner is a huge problem for service providers and we wanted to help solve that problem,” said Bob Cromleigh, Champion ONE director of sales. “As bandwidth demand continues to grow at an exponential rate and 10-Gbps services accelerate, the build out of DWDM networks is a trend that we don’t see slowing down anytime soon. As a result, our innovative NDDW solution will help our customers meet their growth targets, while allowing them to maintain the QoS standard that their customers have come to expect.”Champion ONE says it also plans to add SFP+ transceivers to its NDDW family in the near future.

NYSE Euronext ADVA's next 100G customer?
ADVA Optical Networking says that it has provided NYSE Euronext with ADVA FSP 3000 DWDM platforms for its new Secure Financial Trading Infrastructure (SFTI) access center. The optical transport vendor says NYSE Euronext chose the FSP 3000 “because of its extensive certifications, proven low-latency capabilities, and small footprint,” in the words of a press release. The fact that it also can support 100-Gbps transmission helped as well, adds an ADVA source.NYSE Euronext’s SFTI is a backbone designed to provide services to the financial community for trading, market data, and colocation access.“The specific deployment announced in the press release does not include a live 100G metro link yet,” wrote Jim Theodoras, senior director of technical marketing at ADVA, in an email to Lightwave. “However, one of the reasons NYSE Euronext brought us in as an additional transport vendor was our 100G metro technology, and this deployment was designed to be upgradable to it. The majority of NYSE Euronext's links fall easily within the performance envelope of our 100G metro offering.”ADVA unveiled its 4x28-Gbps, non-coherent approach to metro 100-Gbps transmission in September 2011 (see “ADVA Optical Networking offers cost-reduced 100-Gbps for metro networks” as well as the Lightwave Channel video interview “ADVA talks metro 100G”). Perhaps not coincidentally, NYSE Euronext was among the first to deploy 100 Gbps in its network, using technology from Ciena that also did not rely on coherent detection (see “NYSE Euronext and 100G: The drive to zero latency”)."The financial industry has some of the most demanding requirements of any in the network," commented Christoph Glingener, CTO at ADVA, via the press release. "In this environment, customers need to know their mission-critical data is always safe, always accessible. There's no room for error. But success here isn't just about leading-edge technology, it's about collaboration, it's about developing a strong working relationship. This is something we've developed with NYSE Euronext and we’re looking forward to seeing the relationship grow."

DuPont, Fiber-Line collaborate on fiber-optic cable protection
Fiber-Line Inc. has developed a new line of fiber-optic cables that uses DuPont’s (NYSE: DD) Kevlar technology. The fiber-optic cables, aimed at broadband communications and above-ground installation applications, combine Fiber-Line’s Swellcoat water-blocking technology with the strength and protection that Kevlar AP provides, the two companies say."Advanced protective materials are important to DuPont, and our work with Fiber-Line is a great example of how we re-invent our offerings every day," said Thomas G. Powell, president of DuPont Protection Technologies. "As populations and economies grow, they need critical communications flow that is reliable. Kevlar AP provides a new twist on an essential product to create a higher performing solution -- one that helps us make broadband cable more accessible to people around the world."Fiber-Line estimates that the fiber-optic cable industry is growing at more than 30% annually in such growth markets such as Russia, Latin America, and China."Fiber-Line and DuPont have worked closely together on these protective solutions since our company was born in 1987," said Vince Pappas, Fiber-Line president and CEO. "We know DuPont Kevlar well and we've created a joint solution that brings a new offering to the cable industry -- it combines the benefits of Kevlar and Kevlar AP with our Swellcoat technology to make products that our customers need."
