Intergraph introduces software for designing, managing fiber-optic networks
FEBRUARY 1, 2011 -- Intergraph--a provider of geographic information system (GIS) technology and geospatial infrastructure management systems for utilities, communications companies, municipalities, and transportation agencies, has introduced a new software product for the design and management of fiber-optic networks.G/Technology Fiber Optic Works 1.0 is designed to streamline the management of fiber-optic infrastructure for utilities, municipalities, agencies, and communications companies implementing a public or private fiber network. Fiber Optic Works is an enterprise-scalable design and asset management system that enables users to manage the circuit complexity of a geospatially dispersed fiber-optic communications network infrastructure.Fiber-optic networks are a fundamental component of high-speed broadband communications networks required for electric, gas, and water utility Smart Grid communications, fiber to the home (FTTH, FTTx), and intelligent roadway information management systems, says a representative. Each of these systems links sensors, communications, and critical infrastructure through high-speed backhaul communications that can be implemented with a fiber-optic network. G/Technology Fiber Optic Works combines the geospatial mapping and spatial analysis capabilities of GIS with the design and engineering capabilities of computer-aided design (CAD) and the database and reporting capabilities of an enterprise asset management system. These combined capabilities provide a complete, integrated tool for fiber network designers and operators.G/Technology is a geospatial platform used by utilities and communications companies to manage distribution network infrastructures. As the newest addition to the G/Technology product family, Fiber Optic Works is intended to meet the need for an enterprise data environment designed specifically for fiber-optic networks and reflecting best practice and design standards.Intergraph's fiber system offers access to network configuration and service data to support business processes in all departments, including planning, engineering, maintenance, and provisioning, according to a company spokesperson. The Fiber Optic Works suite is open and based on the Oracle database technology platform, making it easy to incorporate geospatial data into other corporate information systems."The growing global demand for new broadband capacity and communications infrastructure for utilities, municipalities, and communications companies drives the need for superior software tools to speed the design and facilitate the management of fiber infrastructure," says Tony DiMarco, Intergraph's executive director of Global Utilities & Communications. "Intergraph's solutions for utility infrastructure management have been shown to improve design and asset management productivity by as much as 50 percent and provide the ability to 'location-enable' network data for engineering, construction, and customer workflows, dramatically improving efficiency and customer service."

Ericsson supplies GPON gear to China Unicom
JANUARY 27, 2011 -- China Unicom has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to supply its EDA 1500 gigabit passive optical network (GPON) equipment for infrastructure in more than 10 provinces across China. The contract marks China Unicom's first large-scale deployment of GPON technology. China Unicom will use the GPON gear to roll out fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) across the country. Deployment has already begun. Mats H. Olsson, head of Ericsson Region China & North East Asia, says, "This is a milestone in the globalization of GPON -- the new path China Unicom has taken reaffirms the potential of GPON in China and around the world."An increasing interest in FTTH to complement initial FTTB deployments across China is expected to increase the use of GPON technology around the country, say observers (see “Huawei sources: FTTH efforts drive greater GPON interest in China”).Ericsson says it currently is providing GPON to all three of China's telecom operators as well as some cable-TV operators.

Calix E7 selected for two Broadband Stimulus projects in North Dakota
JANUARY 26, 2011 -- Broadband Stimulus award winners Moore and Liberty, Griggs County Telephone Company (MLGC), and Consolidated Telecom (Consolidated) have selected the Calix E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) from Calix Inc. for their respective "Fiber Forward" initiatives. These projects will leverage the system’s broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps), as well as gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and Active Ethernet technologies, to bring advanced digital video services, fast data services, and high-quality voice services to the residents, businesses, and community institutions of the 12 targeted communities. The awards together represent more than $37.5 million in grants, loans, and private investments to be used for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment, and will bring advanced broadband services to these “unserved” and “underserved” communities. Regional engineering, surveying, planning, and asset development firm Kadrmas, Lee, and Jackson (KLJ) has played a role in bringing these two projects to fruition, from providing assistance in the development of their Stimulus applications to continued network implementation support.Serving eastern areas of the state, MLGC will deploy the Calix E7 ESAP and Calix 720GX/GE and 760GX families of ONTs to deliver broadband access to approximately 2,200 residents, businesses, and community institutions in and around Enderlin, Sharon, Glenfield, Sheldon, Finley, McHenry, and the rural areas of Cooperstown, and Binford, North Dakota. MLGC received $22.1 million in overall funds, including a $16.6 million grant and a $5.5 million loan for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.Consolidated’s project will benefit communities on the other side of the state, delivering advanced broadband services to rural areas in southwestern North Dakota. Consolidated plans to deploy the Calix E7 ESAP along with Calix’s 700GX/GE family of ONTs to bring voice, video, and data services to more than 1,400 households in rural Dickinson, Gladstone, Lefor, and New Hradec that currently have limited Internet access. Consolidated was awarded more than $15.4 million in total funding for the project, which includes a $5.8 million grant, a matching $5.8 million loan and private investments of $3.8 million for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.
