US Internet deploys ZyXEL Active Ethernet gear for FTTH
Systems vendor ZyXEL Communications says that US Internet, a Minnetonka, MN-based provider of high speed Internet and hosting services, has deployed ZyXel’s Active Ethernet equipment in a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) application.US Internet evaluated several FTTH approaches and vendors, says ZyXEL, and concluded that a PON-based approach, at $900 per subscriber, would be too expensive. Active Ethernet technology proved more economical, particularly since ZyXEL could support the architecture end-to-end."With the boom of streaming video and other data-intensive features driving the mobile market, our customers are demanding even faster Internet speeds, and fiber seemed the most logical next step," said Travis Carter, vice president of technology for US Internet. "ZyXEL was able to deliver the best, most economical end-to-end solution for US Internet's fiber broadband service offering."US Internet installed ZyXEL's ES3124F 24-port Ethernet fiber switches in their central offices (COs) and ZyXEL's FSG1100 Active Ethernet gateway in customer premises. The FSG1100 then connects to ZyXEL's 802.11n wireless NBG4615 router. The ES3124F's built-in rate limiting feature enables US Internet to offer multiple service tiers, which initially are 15 Mbps, 30 Mbps, and 100 Mbps.The fact that the ZyXEL systems use a uniform user interface and management capabilities simplified training of US Internet personnel, as well as integrating the equipment into US Internet's proprietary management system, "Muniverse." The system enables remote configuration and troubleshooting so US Internet can install new services in under 20 minutes.

Ciena to upgrade Japan-US Cable trans-Pacific network with 100G
Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) says the Japan-US Cable consortium is upgrading its trans-Pacific submarine network, which spans nearly 23,000 km between the US and Japan, with Ciena’s Wavelogic 3 coherent 100G technology.Expected to be in service in early 2013, the upgraded network will bring 5 Tbps of additional capacity to a crucial global network route connecting North America and northern Asia. As the first direct coast-to-coast 100G trans-Pacific submarine network, this will allow Japan-U.S. Cable customers to enjoy the benefits of increased bandwidth and support rapidly increasing capacity demands.[UPDATED] The Japan-US Cable is made up of more than 35 consortium members, including global service providers such as Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, KDDI, NTT, Cable & Wireless Worldwide, and Softbank Telecom.The Japan-US Cable Network includes two landing stations in California, one in Hawaii, and three in Japan. To provide the 100G service, Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform with WaveLogic 3 coherent optical processors will replace existing 10G optical equipment at each landing station.Ciena says its WaveLogic coherent technology enables unobtrusive 40G/100G upgrades to existing submarine networks with only the addition of new terminal equipment, significantly extending the life of existing cable plants and further lengthening its lifespan. As well as scaling bandwidth and lowering costs, WaveLogic-powered networks can be programmed to respond and adapt to changing requirements for capacity, reach, and latency.“Previously, equipment and service companies who installed and maintained these cables were the sole source for submarine landing terminal equipment hardware,” said Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst for optical, Infonetics Research. “But now vendors such as Ciena, who have made large investments in advanced coherent technology for a wide range of carrier applications, are disrupting the economics of the submarine networking industry. With their packet-optical technology, they can retrofit existing plants, increasing capacity and extending the life of submarine carriers’ large capital investments. In return, submarine carriers get access to advanced technology and can elicit true competitive bids for networking hardware.”Ciena says it has now shipped over 14,000 coherent 40G/100G line interfaces shipped to more than 100 customer deployments over land and undersea across the globe, including deployments in eight countries across the Asia Pacific region.

Intune platform built on ATCA technology from Schroff
AdvancedTCA (ATCA) systems and design expertise from electronics packaging specialist Schroff, part of Pentair Technical Products Group, has played a key role in the development of the first commercial product from Dublin-based optical packet switch company Intune Networks Ltd.Unveiled in 2011, Intune’s Verisma iVX8000 network platform uses optical packet switch and transport (OPST) technology (see "Intune Networks readies carrier-class optical packet switching and transport"). The culmination of more than a decade of R&D, the company claims that the product delivers new levels of carrier-network efficiency, operational simplicity, and flexibility to meet the challenge of massive increases in on-demand data traffic.Intune chose an AdvancedTCA architecture for the Verisma product line because it provided a standardized framework that would minimize development costs and reduce time-to-market.“We recognized from the outset that our innovations in controlling optics could be applied to standard components,” explained David McDonald, Intune’s vice president of engineering. “ATCA was already a mature technology that had been adopted fairly broadly by carrier-network operators. While there are a number of standard building blocks within the ATCA ecosystem that we could use, the architecture is also flexible enough to allow any necessary customization to meet the requirements of our particular system specification.”Intune sought an ATCA vendor that could supply the design and manufacture of not only the mechanical parts of the system but also electronic subsystems such as the backplane, power entry module, rack alarm unit, and clock synchronization unit. Schroff won the business.“We looked at a number of packaging providers who had strengths in one area or another, but it was Schroff that best met the criteria of our evaluation process,” said McDonald. “Their mechanical engineering team, their pedigree in ATCA technology, their strong capability in backplane design, and global coverage through their parent company Pentair – these were the factors that led us to select Schroff as our packaging partner.”Schroff had to develop a number of new features for Intune’s system. The most demanding aspect was the development of a special electrical/optical backplane to handle the high transmission rates of the OPST technology. This required extensive simulation and prototyping work, followed by 100% connectivity testing across all the paths in the backplane, the company says.The final Verisma iVX8000 product consists of an ATCA-based shelf measuring 753x448x285 mm and is designed to allow two of the units to be mounted back-to-back within a standard 600-mm-deep ETSI cabinet. Each unit is equipped with two power entry modules for dual redundant operation, as well as hot-swap capability on other modules. By eliminating single points of failure in this way, it achieves a network availability of 99.999%.With cloud computing and mobile broadband continuing to drive on-demand network-based services, Intune expects rapid traction for the Verisma product line. The potential of Intune’s OPST technology has enabled the company to secure total funding in excess of €60 million in the last five years, making it one of the largest private equity investments in the global telecoms equipment sector in recent times.
