Alcatel-Lucent wins Broadband China deal extension for China Telecom
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has won a contract to supply routers to China Telecom as part of the Chinese government’s “Broadband China” initiative. The contract expands Alcatel-Lucent’s involvement in the program; the systems house earlier won a contract to supply fiber to the home (FTTH) equipment (see “Alcatel-Lucent to expand broadband FTTH network for China Telecom”).The Broadband China program aims to provide high-speed broadband connections to more than 250 million households in urban and rural locations by 2015. By the end of 2012, the government expects the project will see 35 million new families connected via FTTH, 50% of broadband customers experiencing speeds of 4 Mbps and above, and 20 million new households with access to fixed broadband. By 2015 the goal is to connect 800 million Web users, including 200 million living in rural locations.Under this new award, Alcatel-Lucent will supply its IP/MPLS 7750 Service Router (SR) portfolio, including the 7750 SR-12 and 7750 SR-7. The routers will act as broadband network gateways to deliver high-performance service and subscriber management capabilities. In conjunction with the 7750 SR, the Alcatel-Lucent 7705 Service Aggregation Routers (SAR) (including the 7705 SAR-M, 7705 SAR-8, and 7705 SAR-18) will deliver an optimized IP/MPLS mobile backhaul, leveraging common SR-OS software, to address China Telecom’s 2G, 3G, and future LTE mobile broadband needs. The deployment of all-IP technology will enable China Telecom to meet rapidly growing demand for high-speed video and data services for householders and consumers across the country, Alcatel-Lucent asserts. The will also preparer China Telecom to deploy 100-Gigabit Ethernet technology for future network upgrades. The contract was secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent’s flagship company in China.

Hancock Telephone upgrade targets broadband, Carrier Ethernet, mobile backhaul
Hancock Telephone, an independent telephone company serving New York and Pennsylvania, will upgrade its network using equipment from ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN), the systems company reveals. The upgrade will aim to improve Hancock’s ability to provide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and Carrier Ethernet over fiber services. The latter will encompass mobile backhaul services, ADTRAN says.Hancock will deploy ADTRAN’s NetVanta 8044M Ethernet Access Gateway and Total Access 5000 with FTTH line cards. Scalability was a critical factor in opting for the new platforms.“We were looking for an Ethernet and fiber-based solution that not only met our needs for a scalable, lower-cost operational model, but also provided us with the stringent quality-of-service and SLA management that is required by our Tier 1 mobile operator customers,” said Robert Wrighter, Jr., vice president at Hancock Telephone. “ADTRAN’s solutions allow us to successfully deploy Ethernet backhaul services in conjunction with premium FTTH services delivery. This helps us remain competitive in our market, and also allows us to offer better and more advanced services than we previously could.”Hancock Telephone serves nearly 2,000 customers located in New York and Pennsylvania.

USCarrier Telecom upgrades network in Georgia
Wholesale long-haul optical transport services provider USCarrier Telecom has finished an overbuild of its network from Savannah to Macon, GA, using Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms from Cyan. The upgrade touches five points of presence along the route. The overbuild took two nights and did not require an interruption in service. The upgrade will provide an express route from South Carolina and Florida to Atlanta, cutting the transit mileage across USCarrier's SONET network in half and creating the ability to provide native Ethernet and Ethernet Exchange across these locations (see "USCarrier Telecom to roll out Ethernet Exchange across southeastern footprint")."The upgrade to USCarrier's SONET network will sustain the evolving network demands the company is facing and position USCarrier to offer these additional, cost-effective services," said Joaquin Luna, president of USCarrier Telecom. "Once again the USCarrier team has not only met but exceeded these demands, and I am pleased to work with these talented professionals."USCarrier has now completed two-thirds of its planned overbuild projects throughout its four-state network.  The remaining upgrades to the network are planned for the next 12 months.
