FiberGate to be Zayo's latest acquisition
Zayo Group continues to expand via acquisition, this time via an agreement to buy FiberGate, Inc., a provider of dark fiber services in metro Washington, DC. The total value of the all-cash transaction was not revealed.Alexandria, VA, based FiberGate controls 130,000 fiber miles (which compose 650 route miles) in the metro DC area. Its network also includes 315 on-net buildings and two recently completed expansions to Frederick and Baltimore, MD.“The DC/Northern Virginia area is a uniquely important geography for government, data centers, and Internet connectivity,” says Dan Caruso, CEO of Zayo Group in explaining the deal. “The combination of AboveNet’s and FiberGate’s networks will create an extensive fiber footprint in this strategic bandwidth corridor.”Zayo agreed to purchase AboveNet this past March. That deal is expected to close this summer.

Yenista Optics offers PMF option on bandpass filters
Fiber-optic test and measurement instrument supplier Yenista Optics says it now offers a PMF option on its manual optical tunable bandpass filter, the WSM-160 BP. This option offers an optimized wavelength range over the C-band from 1525 nm to 1570 nm and passband adjustment from 0.25 to 45 nm, Yenista says. The WSM-160 was designed to enable engineers to extract channels with low insertion loss and no signal distortion thanks to its flat-top shape. Yenista targets the instrument at such applications as studying new modulation formats, cascaded ROADMs, high-bit-rate transmission, pulse shaping, and optical parametric amplification. The new PMF option addresses requirements for measuring new modulation formats based on polarization multiplexing.

Verizon begins backbone convergence
Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) has begun work on converging its four packet backbone networks into a single global IP infrastructure based on MPLS, Executive Vice President and CTO Tony Melone told attendees yesterday at TIA 2012: Inside the Network during his keynote address. In a session with reporters and analysts after his address, Melone said the strategy was to build a new 100-Gbps backbone and migrate the four existing backbones onto it to reduce cost per bit. He described the process as “multi-year,” but noted that “few things of this type take more than three or four years.”The current four backbones cover private, public, wireless data, and switched Ethernet applications, he said.Multiple vendors will supply hardware for the effort, with Melone citing Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, and Juniper Networks as major players. Asked about a preferred technology direction to achieve the convergence, and IP/optical convergence specifically, Melone responded that Verizon likely will use a variety of approaches based on the part of the network in question. No one approach will dominate, he indicated.
