Cisco's VNI: More, more, more!
Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has unveiled the latest edition of its annual Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast. Not surprisingly, it predicts that Internet use will continue to explode, almost everyone will go mobile, and they’ll watch video while they do it.This edition of the VNI Forecast covers 2011 through 2016. As with the previous VNI Forecasts, the report offers Cisco’s take on Internet Protocol (IP) networking growth and trends worldwide. New this year is a complementary study, the Cisco VNI Service Adoption Forecast, which includes global and regional residential, consumer mobile, and business services growth rates.Cisco forecasts that annual global IP traffic will reach 1.3 zettabytes by 2016. It will reach this figure by growing sequentially from 2015 by more than 330 exabytes, which is almost equal to the amount of IP traffic generated globally in 2011 (369 exabytes).Factors that will drive this growth include: More devices: By 2016, the forecast projects there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections -- almost 2.5 connections for each person on earth, -- compared with 10.3 billion in 2011. More Internet users: By 2016, there are expected to be 3.4 billion Internet users -- about 45 percent of the world's projected population according to United Nations estimates.Faster broadband speeds: The average fixed broadband speed is expected to increase nearly four-fold, from 9 Mbps in 2011 to 34 Mbps in 2016. More video: By 2016, 1.2 million video minutes will traverse the Internet each second. Wi-Fi growth: By 2016, over half of the world's Internet traffic is expected to come from Wi-Fi connections.Alongside the Wi-Fi prediction, Cisco expects global mobile Internet data traffic will increase 18X from 2011 to 2016, to 10.8 exabytes per month (130 exabytes annually). However, fixed broadband will still have a role to play, Cisco forecasts. The number of residential Internet users with fixed Internet access will nearly double between 2011 and 2015, rising from 1.7 billion to 2.3 billion, according to the VNI Forecast. Similarly, while the amount of consumer Internet traffic generated by PCs will drop over the forecast period by 13 percentage points, it will still reside at 81%, Cisco says.Regardless of how users access content, much of that content will be video, according to the forecast. For example: Cisco expects 1.5 billion Internet video users worldwide by 2016, up from 792 million Internet video users in 2011. Global advanced video traffic, including 3-D and HDTV, is projected to increase 5X between 2011 and 2016.  Mobile video will be the fastest-growing consumer mobile service globally, jumping from 271 million users in 2011 to 1.6 billion users in 2016.

VI Systems offers TOSA/ROSA modules for 28 Gbps
VI Systems GmbH has introduced the T25-850 transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) and the R25-850 receiver optical subassembly (ROSA) for data rates of up to 28 Gbps. The receiver includes a PIN photodetector within a spectral range of 700-890 nm and a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) in a high frequency TO-style micropackage. The transmitter combines VI Systems’ ultra-high-speed 850-nm VCSEL and driver IC.The transmitter and receiver TO-style package is coupled with a 50-micron multimode fiber. The dimensions of the assemblies are below 6 mm in diameter, which matches SFP transceivers. The overall length, including a plastic boot for strain relief of the optical fiber, is 40 mm. Complementary high-frequency test boards are available. The T25-850 transmitter is specified to operate over a temperature range from 0 to +85 degree C. The supply voltage is 3.3 V. The TOSA features a power consumption of 130 mW.The R25-850 receiver supply voltage is +3.3 V. It features a power consumption of 110 mW. The ROSA includes a VIS photodetector chip in combination with the latest generation of transimpedance amplifier chip from VI Systems to ensure maximum performance at low power consumption.Target applications include short-reach optical transceiver modules used in Storage Area Networks and in the computer industry. The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) defined the first interfaces to operate at data rates of 25 and 28 Gbps. Further standards for serial transmission at ultra-high-speed data rates of 26-56 Gbps are currently being developed within Fibre Channel FC32, the OIF, and the Ethernet IEEE 40/100 Gbps and the Infiniband EDR standards bodies.

Kabel Deutschland achieves 4.7 Gbps downstream with ARRIS gear
ARRIS Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS) says that German cable MSO Kabel Deutschland has used a EuroDOCSIS 3.0-based ARRIS C4 CMTS and 12 ARRIS Touchstone Cable Modem CM820S units to deliver 4.7 Gbps of aggregated downstream data.Kabel Deutschland conducted the tests at a school in the city of Schwerin, Germany. The cable service provider recently upgraded Schwerin’s cable plant to 862 MHz, and the 4.7-Gbps field test was based on currently available tandards, technology, and hardware, ARRIS says. Each of the cable modems accessed eight bonded Annex A (8 MHz) channels.“Our field test with ARRIS, with an aggregate download capacity of well over 4 Gbps, was a complete success and underlines the unique selling proposition of our cable network as the only extensive ultra-fast network in the German broadband market,” said Kabel Deutschland CTO Lorenz Glatz. “Using this technology, a feature length movie could theoretically be downloaded in 8 seconds – at speeds faster than a standard laptop or modem can even process – demonstrating that today’s broadband cable network is already a high-performance and sustainable infrastructure offering huge untapped potential.”“This demonstrates that today’s HFC plant has the capacity to deliver a full IP video load, and that the entire HFC plant can be converted into one or more enormous pipes to meet future consumer bandwidth demands, using current technology and networks,” noted Tom Cloonan, ARRIS CTO, Network Solutions.  “We congratulate Kabel Deutschland on pushing through existing barriers to deliver their customers the services of tomorrow, today.”
