GPON FTTH deployment contract from Rochester Telephone goes to Zhone Technologies
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Rochester Telephone Company, Inc. (RTC), a voice, video, and data services provider in Rochester, IN, will deploy Zhone’s MXK intelligent Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) equipment to enable triple-play services for local residences and small businesses with a fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure. After the completion of a two-month trial in February 2011, RTC will use Zhone’s MXK gear to deliver high speed Internet access, VoIP and video services to its customers via GPON FTTH.“With over 6,500 access lines in our network today, we needed a fiber access vendor with superior scale and effective network management capabilities. We were also looking for a partner that could help us seamlessly upgrade our existing Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) network,” noted Joe McCarter, president of RTC. “Zhone was the right choice for us not only for the scale they offer with the high density eight-port GPON Optical Line Termination (OLT) card, but also for the added optimal benefit of recurring savings realized with the Zhone EZ Touch Provisioning system.” Zhone also will supply its zNID GPON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs).

Chunghwa Telecom using Alcatel-Lucent for GPON
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it is working with Chunghwa Telecom to build the country’s first gigabit passive optical network (GPON). The Taiwanese carrier will use the GPON fiber to the home (FTTH) and business network to provide triple-play services to its residential and business customers.Commercial operation of the initial phase of Chunghwa’s GPON network should begin by Q3 of 2011.The systems supplier asserts that Chunghwa Telecom chose Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON equipment for its high efficiency, stability, quality of service, and professional services expertise.Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) platform as well as the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System (AMS). Alcatel-Lucent will also provide professional services expertise in the areas of software integration, network management system installation, and commissioning.

Woodstock Telephone taps Cyan for packet-optical transport for broadband stimulus project
Cyan says that Woodstock Telephone, an independent operating company based in Ruthton, MN, has chosen its Cyan Z-Series of multi-layer packet-optical transport platforms, CyMS multi-layer management system, and its recently announced CyNOC network operations center (NOC) service to expand its fiber network with two transport rings to support over 3,600 premises in the southwestern portion of the state. The network, which will triple the size of Woodstock’s serving area, will be built with a combination of grants and loans totaling over $15 million awarded from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds under the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Broadband Initiative Program (BIP).“By expanding our serving area by an order of magnitude, it is essential for Woodstock to choose partners that can support our network with not only innovative equipment, but the tools to help us operate more efficiently,” said Ken Knuth, president and CEO of Woodstock Telephone. “Cyan has proved to be exactly that kind of partner, which will not only help us to deliver advanced services over fiber today, but also give us the flexibility to add services such as video and Carrier Ethernet in the future.”Breaking ground later this year, Woodstock’s new fiber network will reach multiple communities across four counties. Upon completion of Woodstock’s fiber network, residences and businesses alike will be able to take advantage of broadband speeds of up to 20 Mbps for advanced voice and data services. To support the fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network that will reach subscriber homes and businesses, Woodstock will build two Cyan-powered transport rings, one to the north of Woodstock and another to the south. Woodstock will deploy both of Cyan's Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms, the Cyan Z77 and Z33, within the rings.
