EXFO, RAD pair for Carrier Ethernet data network monitoring
EXFO Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO) (TSX: EXF) and RAD Data Communications have joined to enable both end-to-end and segment-by-segment monitoring of Carrier Ethernet based data networks. The collaboration sees EXFO’s Brix System monitoring capability integrated into RAD’s ETX network interface devices (NIDs) to enable BrixWorx to process data collected by the NIDs. The new capabilities address requirements for SLA verification, handling the proliferation of management platforms, and providing true end-to-end visibility, said Motty Anavi, vice president of business development RAD, and Kaynam Hedayat, CTO and senior director of product line management for EXFO Service Assurance.Once RAD adds EtherSAM capabilities to its NIDS – a feature on the product roadmap – the company’s customers will no longer have to attempt to stitch together data from disparate systems in an effort to get a complete view of the network. The result is standards-based, round the clock monitoring based on 802.1ag and Y.1731, the sources said. The fact that the combination also enables detailed monitoring between NIDs means that operators can perform active monitoring and trouble shooting activities to pinpoint problems. The enhanced monitoring capabilities are becoming particularly important as Carrier Ethernet is used for mobile backhaul (particularly in environments where multiple operators share the same tower) and more complex metro Ethernet service applications.Carriers will be able to access usage data per port as well as such parameters as jitter, latency, and loss on an end-to-end basis. In future, RAD customers will be able to use BrixWorx to provision performance monitoring activities as well as turn-up tests. As a result, the combination will lower both capital and operational expenses and make service turn up and changes easier and quicker to perform. The new capabilities are being fielded first on RAD’s ETX-204A v3 and ETX-203A v3 NIDs. The initial release is now available and is currently being tested by customers. A follow-on release late this year or early in 2013 will see more NIDs added to the family, as well as additional correlation and analysis functions.

IEEE standardizes body area networking
The IEEE has announced a new standard, IEEE 802.15.6-2012, designed to support the design of ultra-low power wireless devices operating in or around the human body. The standard aims to address and compensate for the effects of a body on network performance, effectively enabling "body area networking." The IEEE hopes that IEEE 802.15.6-2012 will enable wireless implantable devices, assist in the development of new opportunities for delivering better healthcare, and support other uses for wearable computing devices.IEEE 802.15.6-2012 specifies a short range, low power, and reliable wireless communication protocol for use in close proximity to, or inside, a human body. It supports data rates up to 10 Mbps. The standard helps support the combination of security, reliability, quality of service, low power, data rate, and interference protection needed to address the breadth of body area network applications not supplied by other wireless communications standards, the IEEE asserts.“The IEEE Standards Association is a global leader and innovator in communications standards development and this standard is in keeping with that tradition,” said Art Astrin, chair of the IEEE 802.15.6 Task Group. “It underscores our commitment to the realization of a true body area network to meet the challenges of achieving far-ranging and futuristic solutions for healthcare, prosthetics, implants, and a variety of novel consumer uses.”Examples of the applications served by the IEEE 802.15.6-2012 standard include routine diagnostic testing such as electroencephalograms (EEGs), electrocardiograms (ECGs), and monitoring of vital signals such as temperature, heart rate, oxygen, and blood pressure. It may also find use in automated drug delivery systems, to interconnect a wearable or implanted glucose sensor with an insulin pump, in deep brain or cortical stimulators to address conditions such as Parkinson’s, in retinal implants to give vision to the blind, or in sensors to aid in sport training, the IEEE speculates.Similarly, IEEE 802.15.6-2012 could find uses for personal entertainment and gaming, including body-centric approaches to wearable computers.

Casa Systems offers CMTS with integrated CCAP functions
Casa Systems has launched the DS8x96, a downstream module that adds Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) functionality to its C10G Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). The module is designed to enable cable MSOs to deploy DOCSIS, IPTV, and MPEG video on a single chassis and increase channel density over existing CMTS modules. The DS8x96 module supports 96 channels per port, including 32 channels of narrowcast and 64 channels of broadcast for a total of 768 channels per module. As the C10G can accommodate 11 primary DS8x96 modules and one protection module, the CMTS can support more than 8000 narrowcast and broadcast channels downstream."With the announcement of the DS8X96 module, Casa Systems continues to prove to be an innovator in the CMTS market," said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, broadband access and video, for Infonetics Research. "The new module positions Casa as one of the leaders in the upcoming competition for lucrative CCAP contracts worldwide.""Casa Systems was the first company to release a gull DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS to the market and we are doing it again as the first company to release a bull CCAP system,” said Jerry Guo, founder and CEO of Casa Systems.. “Casa's CCAP approach is dramatically different from the rest of the industry. With our first CCAP release we have created an integrated, full CCAP system that delivers DOCSIS, IPTV and MPEG video and it is available today. Our current C10G customers can seamlessly migrate to CCAP by adding the DS8x96 module without changing any other hardware on the platform.”The CCAP offering offers hardware redundancy, software resiliency, IPDR data collection, XML configuration, and advanced routing features such as IS-IS, OSPF, BGP for IPv6, and MPLS, Guo added.
