Arrayed Fiberoptics offers non-contact fiber-optic connectors
Arrayed Fiberoptics Corp. (AFC) has launched a new type of fiber-optic connectors. The “non-contact” (NC) fiber connector is designed to eliminates the physical contact between fiber end faces.Typical optical fiber connectors use physical contact (PC), in which two optical fiber end faces are pushed together to eliminate the air gap between them and suppress the light reflections at the glass/air interfaces. The new NC connector includes an small, intentional air gap intended to prevent damage to the optical surfaces. Anti-reflection coatings suppress the light reflections at the glass/air interfaces.Because the connector doesn’t require physical contact between the end faces that could cause wear with repeated use, AFC believes the new NC connector will last much longer, with no performance degradation even after many repeated connections.AFC asserts the patent-pending NC optical fiber connector offers the following features: Insertion loss of less than 0.1 dB  Return loss of greater than 65 dB  Minimal insertion loss variation (less than 0.01 dB, a factor of 10 better than current products, AFC says)  Exceptional durability (thousands of repeated nnections with no increase in insertion loss)   Low sensitivity to dust and contaminants   Guaranteed intermateability among connectors   Cost competitive to existing connectors  Same form factors as current connectors and same connector adapters.

Shenzhen work stoppage helps trip Oclaro in 3Q12
Oclaro, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR) reported revenues below guidance for the third quarter of its fiscal 2012, at least in part due to a work stoppage at its Shenzhen facility. The company reported revenues $88.7 million in the quarter, versus its guidance of $90 million to $97 million (see "Oclaro weathers Thailand flooding in fiscal second quarter"). The company estimates the work stoppage cost the company about $4 million during the quarter, which ended March 31, 2012.While the company hasn’t revealed what triggered the work stoppage, the facility is up for sale after Oclaro reached an agreement with Venture Corporation Ltd. (SGX: VENM.SI) to transfer the final assembly and test operations conducted at the Shenzhen plant to Venture's Malaysia facility over the next three years.“Unfortunately, this [type of] work stoppage is becoming more common in this part of China,” Alain Couder, chairman and CEO of Oclaro, told attendees on an analyst call April 26.In addition to the problems the job action caused, Oclaro saw flat sales of 40-Gbps modules and a decline in 10-Gbps module sales; combined, module sales decreased $2.1 million sequentially. Telecom components made up some of this shortfall, up $1.2 million sequentially. Amplification, filtering, and optical switching revenues did even better, increasing $3 million in the quarter.Overall, the $88.7 million in revenues for the quarter represented a slight increase from the $86.5 million accrued in the fiscal second quarter. One product that didn’t yet help was the MI8000 100-Gbps coherent transponder, which Couder said has yet to begin sampling. That process will begin “shortly,” Couder said on the call.GAAP gross margin was 15% for the quarter, also a slight improvement versus GAAP gross margin of 13% in the second quarter of fiscal 2012.Couder also repeated that revenues in the fourth quarter, which ends June 30, will continue to see a drag from flood-related production issues with the company’s wavelength-selective switch (WSS) and modulator products. Couder asserted these two production lines would be completely up to speed by the end of June.Nevertheless, the company expects revenues overall to increase in the final quarter of the fiscal year. The company forecasted revenues to fall within the range of $100 million to $109 million.

Tektronix enhances optical modulation analysis with digital oscilloscopes
Tektronix, Inc. says its OM4000 series optical modulation analyzer can now drive the DSA8300 digital sampling oscilloscope to perform analysis on complex modulation formats, with higher vertical bit resolution than real-time based alternatives at lower total system cost. The system can analyze PM-QPSK, QAM, and other complex-modulation signals, with an enhanced vertical resolution of 16 bits.Tektronix says it the only supplier to offer a single modulation analyzer that works with both real-time and equivalent-time (sampling) oscilloscopes. With this enhancement to the OM4000, Tektronix is giving optical networking designers and manufacturers the flexibility to choose between real-time and equivalent-time acquisition systems to suit their measurement needs. The company had given the concept a test run at the OFC/NFOEC conference this past March (see “New in 100G lab test: An OFC/NFOEC 2012 Reporter's Notebook”). The new capability provides competition to Southern Photonics, which has offered its IQScope optical modulation analyzer paired with digital sampling scopes, including those from Tektronix (see “Southern Photonics launches optical modulation analyzer based on equivalent-time oscilloscopes”).The company says the OM4000 paired with the DSA8300 is ideal for network equipment manufacturers and designers who require higher vertical resolution than can be accomplished with real-time oscilloscopes, or who are looking to reduce system costs.Key capabilities provided by the DSA8300 in this application include: 16-bit vertical resolution and 450 µV RMS noise floor at 60 GHz for added dynamic range and accuracy. Up to 60 GHz of bandwidth on four channels to help future-proof the system for next generation baud rates. Timing jitter as low as 450 fs RMS to enable visibility into real signal performance."As the worldwide demand for bandwidth continues to grow at a rapid pace, our customers are being asked to find ways to increase the efficiency, data rates and reliability of optical network equipment while at the same time reducing cost," said Brian Reich, general manager, Performance scilloscopes, Tektronix. "With this enhancement to the OM4000 Series, we are meeting these needs with cost-saving flexibility, higher vertical resolution and future-proof levels of measurement bandwidth."Tektronix’s OM4000 series optical modulation analyzers enable efficient and accurate characterization of serial communications in fiber at 100 Gbps and beyond. With coherent lightwave analysis capabilities, Tektronix provides the acquisition and display of constellation diagrams, Q plots, polarization analysis, and source laser stability to better understand fiber-based signal quality.
