FTTH in Europe: A long way to go
There were nearly 75 million FTTH subscribers worldwide at the end of 2012, but only 10.3 million of them are in Europe, according to the latest update to the FTTH Council's "FTTH Ranking" unveiled at the FTTH Conference in Munich.Taking out Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States gives a subscriber total of 5.7 million in the EU35. By comparison, North America has 9.7 million fiber subscribers.>The figures show that Europe is still playing catch up when it comes to FTTH. But it’s making valiant efforts. The number of homes passed increased by 41% in 2011, and the number of new subscribers was up 28%, says iDATE, which compiles the market panorama data on behalf of the FTTH Council Europe. It is good to see that FTTH adoption continues to grow even in time of economic uncertainty,” said Hartwig Tauber, director general of the FTTH Council Europe. However, he admits that growth is slower than expected, largely because of the economic downturn.Adoption is still the big challenge. As deployments outpaced the number of new subscribers, the overall subscriber penetration rate fell from 20.3% in 2010 to 18.4% at the end of 2011. “People look at the take rate and say that it proves that people don’t want fiber, but if you look at the panorama you can see there are countries where the take rate is very high, especially in the more mature markets where they have had fiber for some years,” Tauber points out.Looking at the detail of what’s happening within Europe reveals huge variations between different countries.Twenty countries meet the criterion to be included in the ranking (see figure); a country must number at least 200,000 households with more than 1% of them connected to a fiber network using FTTH or FTTB. There were no new entrants to the ranking this year.Lithuania still leads the ranking with 28.3% market penetration, and Norway has moved up into second place at 14.7%. Below them there has been some shuffling in the ranks with Portugal and Turkey showing the highest growth rates. In absolute numbers, Russia is the largest market by a considerable margin, counting 4.5 million subscribers – nearly half of the region’s total.France is the second largest market, followed by the Ukraine, Italy, and Portugal.Large economies like France and Italy languish at the bottom of the ranking; in fact, Latvia and Turkey moved ahead of Italy.Spain was one of the fastest growing markets for FTTH, and looks set to join the ranking soon. But the usual offenders are still missing, namely Germany and the UK.For the first time, the UK earned a mention, being one of the countries with a high growth rate, but it is starting from a very small base. By the end of 2011, the UK had an estimated 7,750 FTTH/B subscribers, and still has the dubious distinction of being the fiber laggard of Europe.

OIF members plan 100G interface interoperability demo
Ten member companies of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) are planning a multi-vendor demonstration of 100G interfaces at OFC/NFOEC next month. Taking place under the title “Interoperability 2012 – Enabling High-Speed Dynamic Services,” the demo is intended to show that components suppliers are ready to support the optical industry’s move to higher speed interfaces and backplanes. The demo will show interworking of 100G parts from different components and module vendors.  Parts under test will meet the OIF’s Physical and Link Layer (PLL) Common Electrical Interface (CEI) 28G Very Short Reach (VSR) draft implementation agreement that defines chip-to-module electrical interfaces. Demonstrations of the CEI-25G-LR signal for backplane interfaces will also be tested.“This demonstration of CEI-28G-VSR shows the ability to reach 100G for next-generation 4x25-Gbps based optical transceivers,” said Ed Frlan of Gennum and the OIF PLL Interoperability Working Group chair. “The CEI-25G-LR and CEI-28G-VSR electrical interface and signaling schemes being tested for interoperability support multiple 100G applications.”Equipment used during the testing includes host IC with VSR SERDES, host PCB traces, optical module connectors, module retimers, and optical transceivers. Test equipment used in the demonstration is being supplied by Tektronix, Inc. “This interoperability test and demonstration shows a critical mass – with multiple vendors supporting the CEI-28G-VSR,” said Rod Smith of TE Connectivity and the OIF Marketing Awareness & Education Committee co-chair. “There is momentum in the marketplace to incorporate higher speed signals.”

R&E networks collaborate on 100G deployment
The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC), the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP), and Internet2 are planning a long-term collaboration to deploy 100-Gbps networking capabilities across the entire West Coast of the United States. The plans also call for sharing of a common optical networking infrastructure and working together on many network-based initiatives. This shared infrastructure will combine fiber-optic cable from PNWGP and CENIC with Internet2’s new optical transport system from Ciena (see “Ciena, Internet2 partner on new national 100G network”). Initially, the shared infrastructure will support the West Coast portion of Internet2’s new nationwide backbone network and the advanced research and education (R&E) peering and exchange services provided by CENIC and PNWGP.This long-term collaboration also includes the Pacific Wave international distributed exchange, whose major exchange and access points in Seattle and Los Angeles are being interconnected with 100-Gbps capabilities. Twenty-seven networks representing more than 40 countries throughout the Pacific Rim, the Americas, and the Middle East connect to one another via Pacific Wave.“These 100-Gbps network interconnection and transit capabilities will enable our US and international research partners to achieve the performance and service capabilities required by next-generation research initiatives,” noted Louis Fox, president and CEO of CENIC.Internet2, CENIC, and PNWGP also will provide advanced broadband network capabilities, services, content, and applications to expand the U.S. Unified Community Anchor Network’s (U.S. UCAN) western community and to existing participants in all three organizations’ collective R&E networks.Ron Johnson, chair, Pacific Northwest Gigapop, and Stephen Wolff, chief technology officer, Internet2, both of whose involvements in the Internet date back to the early days of ARPAnet and NSFnet, praised this new partnership and technical platform. Johnson noted that this “establishes the evolved relationship between our organizations as well as the directly shared technical platform that we have all been seeking. This will enable the R&E communities we serve both to pursue the next generation of innovations enabled by our networks, apps, and content, and to extend them for even broader impact to other key constituencies.”Wolff echoed these views, saying “thanks to this partnership, there will be many new opportunities for collaboration in the service of our communities and in the advancement of technology.”
