AFL unveils quad OTDR, high-density cable at BICSI Winter Conference
AFL will launch a pair of new products this week at the 2012 BICSI Winter Conference at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. The unveilings will include the NOYES M210 QUAD OTDR, which is a new "inspection-ready" hand-held OTDR, as well as an improved high-density, sub-unitized MicroCore data center cable. The NOYES M210 QUAD OTDR offers better performance, higher functional integration, and an improved user experience over current µOTDRs, AFL asserts. The M210 is the first OTDR in its size and price range that includes an integrated optical power meter, an integrated visual fault identifier, and support for a high-resolution Digital FiberScope, the company adds.Meanwhile, the new MicroCore data center cable is 40% smaller in diameter than the industry-standard alternative, AFL says. The cable provides what the company says is “industry leading” density, ease of termination, and fiber organization. The data center cable is available with 96 and 144 fibers in UL-compliant plenum, riser, and IEC low-smoke zero halogen constructions. The new products, as well as many of AFL’s existing offerings, are on display at Booth #400.

GigOptix samples 100G coherent optical modulator
GigOptix, Inc. (OTCQX:GGOX), a supplier of high-speed electronic and electro-optic components, says it has begun sampling the LX8240, a 100G dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM).The LX8240 MZM is the latest addition to GigOptix's portfolio of 100G drivers and transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs). In its recent optical components report, Ovum identified 100G as the fastest growing segment within optical communications with a compound annual growth rate of 107%.Introduced in time for the market takeoff, GigOptix says the LX8240 benefits include its ultra-small form factor, low insertion loss, and low power consumption, making it ideal for use in metro, long-haul, and ultra-long haul optical transport applications. This modulator leverages the company’s proprietary Thin Film Polymer on Silicon (TFPS) technology to bring to customers what GigOptix claims is the lowest power consumption in the smallest footprint modulator available in the market.Dr Raluca Dinu, general manager and vice president of the optics product line at GigOptix, said, "The continuous consumer-generated demand for more bandwidth is forcing operators to upgrade to next-generation 100G networks, and we believe that the LX8240 addresses customers' needs to shrink the size and power of their solutions without compromising on performance."GigOptix notes that the LX8240 engineering samples are manufactured on GigOptix's production line at Sanmina-SCI in Shenzhen, China – no doubt to indicate that production hasn’t been impacted by the recent flooding in Thailand (see "Ovum assesses Thai flood impact").Samples are available now. GigOptix is also offering the TFPS modulator chips for evaluation and integration into customized modules.

CyOptics intros 40-Gbps TOSA, ROSA for QSFP+ transceivers
CyOptics Inc. has made available a new series of 40-Gbps transmit optical subassemblies (TOSA) and receive optical subassemblies (ROSA) for use in Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable (QSFP+) transceivers. Such transceivers are growing increasingly popular as interfaces for high-bandwidth routers and switches in datacenter and enterprise networks. The TPIC-10410-A1 TOSA delivers four CWDM wavelengths in the 1310-nm window on a single optical output. The TOSA integrates four uncooled 10-Gbps directly modulated lasers (DMLs), an optical multiplexer to combine the laser wavelengths, and four PIN photo-detectors for backfacet power monitoring. The RPIC-10410-A1 ROSA integrates an optical demultiplexer to separate the four incoming CWDM wavelengths, an array of four 10-Gbps PIN photo-detectors, and a quad trans-impedance amplifier (TIA).The TOSA and ROSA are packaged in hermetic, planar packages with an LC receptacle optical interface and two flex connects for the electrical interface. The TOSA (which is 15.8 mm in length and 5.8 mm in width) and ROSA (17.2 mm in length and 5.8 mm in width) packages are compliant for use in the QSFP+ transceiver form factor and serve the 40GBase-LR4 (10 km) application per IEEE 802.3ba, CyOptics says.“Datacenter operators and equipment manufacturers don’t have to worry about the interconnect flavor now that QSFP+ is available for both SR4 and LR4,” said Ovum’s Principal Analyst Karen Liu. “CyOptics’ 40GbE TOSA and ROSA enable this attractive high-density form-factor for singlemode transceivers. We project 40G QSFP+ for LR4 applications to overtake CFP quickly, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of over 79% from 2012 through 2015; they represent one of the fastest growing market segments in the optical component space.”
