Fujitsu unveils UK FTTH network plans
Fujitsu this week surprised the industry with the announcement that it plans to build an open access network based principally on fiber to the home (FTTH) technology in the UK. The company will partner with Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) on the network technology, while UK alternative service providers Virgin Media and TalkTalk have agreed to use the FTTH network, which Fujitsu says will reach as many as 5 million homes in rural parts of the UK.When completed, the superfast FTTH network will support symmetrical 1-Gbps services to each customer. While Fujitsu has not provided details of the technology that will underpin the FTTH network, Cisco’s involvement strongly implies the use of an Ethernet point-to-point architecture. Cisco has provided equipment for similar open access networks across Europe. The plan puts Fujitsu squarely in competition with BT Openreach, which itself has announced a superfast broadband initiative that will combine FTTH with fiber to the cabinet (FTTC; see "BT to trial gigabit FTTP broadband"). It should also be noted that Fujitsu said it would use FTTH “in the vast majority of areas,” which implies it will reserve the option to use FTTC as well. In a twist likely to gall BT, Fujitsu plans to leverage BT’s ducts and poles, which UK regulatory agency Ofcom recently ruled must be made available for competitive carriers (see "Ofcom: BT must share fiber, duct, and poles"). Both of the projects respond to a £530 million program the UK Government has launched to promote investment in superfast broadband in rural communities. The Government quickly welcomed Fujitsu to the party. “I am delighted that Fujitsu along with Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Cisco share the Government's vision,” said Communication Minister Ed Vaizey. “The collaboration between these companies was exactly the sort of ambition and innovation the Government wanted to stimulate by removing barriers to broadband rollout. Fujitsu and their industry partners are pledging a substantial investment in the UK and it represents a deep commitment to the future success of this country. While Virgin Media and TalkTalk will be the first users of the network, Fujitsu is hoping they won’t be the last. The company says it will provide access on a wholesale basis to other ISPs and service providers interested in extending their customer footprint.Despite the big names involved, the project's success is not guaranteed, according to Ovum analyst Charlie Davies. In a column posted on Ovum's website, Davies called the proposal "one of the most ambitious and risky infrastructure ventures that the UK has seen in years."Davies is particularly uncertain about the business case. "So far, there has been little insight into how Fujitsu came up with the £2bn figure that it expects the project to cost," he writes. "Its estimate works out to be £400 per home, which seems extremely low, even when its access to ducts and poles is taken into account. Typical deployment costs for FTTH deployments in less dense areas have ranged from €2,500 to €5,000 per house."

Doylestown Telephone selects Zhone Technologies to support FTTH triple-play and ADSL deployments
Zhone Technologies Inc., a provider of FTTx network access tools, announced a new North American fiber project with Doylestown Telephone Company, a local exchange telephone service provider in Doylestown and surrounding Chippewa Township in Wayne County, Ohio. The operator will deploy Zhone’s MXK multiservice access node (MSAN) to enable triple-play services for its customers using gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) network technologies. After the completion of a two-month trial in March 2011, Zhone’s MXK solution will enable Doylestown to deliver affordable and reliable high-speed Internet access, VoIP, and video services to its customers. Both Radio Frequency (RF) and Internet Protocol (IP) video over fiber work well for passive optical network (PON) or point-to-point Active Ethernet with the MXK.“Our more than 4,000 residential and small business customers continue demanding more and more bandwidth. We knew we needed a solution to address not only current bandwidth requirements, but future upgrade needs as well,” explains Tom Brockman, president of Doylestown Telephone Company. “We chose Zhone for its superior scale, effective network management capabilities, and system flexibility to support multiple services in the same chassis. We were especially impressed with the cost savings this solution provides us–and our customers.”To upgrade its existing network, Doylestown chose Zhone’s MXK optical line termination (OLT) card, zNID optical network terminals (ONTs), and Zhone EZ Touch Provisioning system. Support for the high-density, 8-port GPON OLT card on the MXK was critical to Doylestown. The MXK design aligns well with Doylestown’s specific field requirements to provide optimum cost efficiency and maximum service differentiation, especially when combined with zNID GPON ONTs, says the spokesperson. The system capabilities of Zhone’s MXK platform benefit both Doylestown and its subscribers, including utilization of up to one gigabit capacity in the home and the ability to support the extreme bandwidth demands generated by multiple high-definition television (HDTV) screens, high-definition digital video recorder (HD-DVR) content, and video streaming within the home.“The North American footprint of Zhone’s MXK continues to grow as a result of significant new projects we’ve recently announced with Myakka Communications, Rochester Telephone, and others,” says Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. The ZMS provides management support for the multi-service networks Zhone supports. The client-server architecture uses industry-standard components, such as an application server framework and a relational database. ZMS automates complex, tedious, and error-prone tasks, raising network productivity, improving efficiency, and reducing operating costs for Doylestown. As an extension of the ZMS, Zhone EZ Touch is a next-generation, carrier-class network management and provisioning system that reduces recurring operational expenditure (OPEX) by minimizing truck rolls and manual subscriber-specific features and, effectively, automating the service provisioning functionality.

New Hampshire FastRoads begins high-speed broadband network project, selects Design Nine
New Hampshire FastRoads LLC began the first phase of its project to bring high-speed broadband to western New Hampshire, awarding a design and project management contract for the development of its regional broadband network to Design Nine.Design Nine will design a next-generation fiber network that will deliver high-speed broadband, including Internet access, to the Upper Valley and Monadnock Regions of New Hampshire. It will include “last-mile” network projects in Rindge and Enfield, N.H., and “middle-mile” projects delivering fiber network access to 20 towns and 220 Community Anchor Institutions in the area.Design Nine will provide network architecture design and mapping services, as well as assist FastRoads in all facets of project planning, including environmental assessment, bidding, procurement, quality assurance, and regulatory permitting, among many other responsibilities. The network design will begin immediately, with construction of the first phase of the network to be completed in Spring 2012.New Hampshire FastRoads is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) of the Monadnock Economic Development Corp. N.H. FastRoads is partnering with Network New Hampshire Now (NNHN), a collaboration of public and private organizations to develop a high-speed broadband network throughout the state.NH FastRoads and NNHN are funded by an economic stimulus grant and private funding to expand broadband coverage to keep the state vibrant, innovative and relevant for businesses, citizens and educational institutions. The organization’s work will enable delivery of a variety of services, such as consumer and business Internet access, voice telephony (VoIP), IP-based television, movies on demand, business class videoconferencing, health care services (e.g., in- home monitoring), home and business security, computer backup, public access television, Internet radio, and other advanced services.“Design Nine has helped build many broadband networks, and is one of the few firms in the country with experience in open access, fiber to the premise broadband networks, which FastRoads will be. The company was also instrumental in providing the broadband planning, network architecture design, financial planning, and grant writing that enabled FastRoads to partner with NNHN in submitting a successful grant proposal for funding,” says Carole Monroe, FastRoads executive director.“Our work with FastRoads will help the region prosper in the knowledge economy. In addition to designing the network, our role is to enable FastRoads staff and board members to make smart technology and strategic decisions, based on our teams’ 160+ years of combined experience in planning and project management of open access broadband networks,” says Andrew Cohill, Design Nine’s founder and CEO.
