WIPO ASSIGNS PATENT TO ZYNON TECHNOLOGIES, LLC FOR "CLEANING DEVICE FOR OPTICAL FIBER COMPONENTS".
According to the abstract posted by the World Intellectual Property Organization: "A cleaning device (10, 110, 210) may be a card-like member such as a flap (16, 116), integrally formed with a dispenser container (12), or a slotted member (36) mounted on a stand-alone cleaning device (110). A cleaning wipe fabric (22, 122) is suspended overa plurality of cleaning slots (26a-26d, 126a-126d) and held under moderate tension so that the wipe fabric, when deflected by a fiber optic end or the like being cleaned, sags within the cleaning slot to better enclose and clean the tip of the fiber optic end. Used cleaning fabric (22, 122) can easily be removed and replaced as needed to avoid using the same area of fabric more than once."

6/2/2012 Saudi telecom operator Mobily said it has unveiled the second public Cisco TelePresence Suite, that enables customers to minimize travel time and expenses by delivering a live, immersive, face-to-face experience via the network, in Jeddah.According to Mobily, the Cisco TelePresence technology allows users to enjoy real-time communication and to collaborate with colleagues, customers and partners even if they are in a different city.Participants sit at a conference table in the Cisco TelePresence room and connect to the other participants with a simple phone call, it added.Mobily said the first Mobily TelePresence Suite was launched in Riyadh this July. With the Jeddah launch, Mobily now connects 32 worldwide business cities across five continents with its partner Tata Communication and other's partner networks making TelePresence a truly global collaboration tool, said a statement from Mobily. Both rooms in Riyadh and Jeddah are installed with a Cisco TelePresence System 3010, which allows up to six people to connect simultaneously across a maximum of 48 locations. It comprises three 65-inch plasma screens and a specially designed physical table that sits six participants on each side of the virtual table. It also features an additional LCD display for sharing rich-media content and other data using simple collaboration functionality as well as integrated cameras, lights and microphones so that speakers use less power. The setup of the rooms allows participants to feel as if they are sitting across a table, in a life-size meeting room.Customers can purchase meeting slots in the Mobily TelePresence room, in advance, on an hourly or daily basis through Mobily interactive 24-hour online booking system with its partner Tata Communication, said a senior official.'We were proud to pioneer this unique technology to businesses in Saudi in July and we are even more delighted to now be able to extend the offering to Jeddah in addition to Riyadh,' remarked Dr.Marwan Al Ahmdi, Mobily CBO.'We are able to do this because Mobily is the only company in the Kingdom that has the fiber infrastructure to offer Cisco TelePresence services cost-effectively,' he added.Mobily public TelePresence not only helps to save time and costs it also helps boost productivity by reducing or eliminating the need to travel, thereby facilitating a 'greener' environment by reducing the carbon footprint. It also offers increased flexibility to Mobily customers in the Kingdom, who will be able to conduct business meetings or sensitive negotiations.Wayne Fullerton, managing director for Cisco in Saudi Arabia said "Our goal is to continue to empower our customers through technology, hence our collaboration with Mobily to launch a second Public Cisco TelePresence room in the Kingdom.''Now Mobily customers can also enjoy the carbon and cost savings that our Cisco TelePresence solution offers.

Redundant broadband cable a reality in Humboldt County; $14.4 million fiber-optic cable project launched Friday
Humboldt County is less vulnerable to broadband Internet blackouts thanks to a new redundant fiber optic cable that runs along the Highway 36 corridor in Humboldt and Trinity counties.Friday marked the official launch of the 131-mile system, which is being leased by Internet service providers like Suddenlink and the local 101 Netlink business. Since 2003, Humboldt has relied on one fiber optic cable running along U.S. Highway 101 as its only means of broadband Internet access.Gregg Foster, executive director of the Redwood Region Economic Development Corporation, said Humboldt residents experienced multiple outages in 2007 -- events that drove home the need for a second line."I remember when the very first outage occurred, and all of a sudden nothing worked," Foster said. "It knocked all the telecommunications off-line in the county."He said it's difficult to attract businesses to an area without redundancy, as there's no assurance that residents will still be able to access the Internet, run credit card transactions and pull money from ATMs if a line goes down."We see this as a hugely important piece of basic infrastructure that a community needs," Foster said about the second cable.Third District Humboldt County Supervisor Mark Lovelace agreed. He said reliable, redundant broadband is critical to economic and community development. He said the outages exposed the area's vulnerability, and a redundant line has been a long time coming."This has taken years and years of effort to make it happen," Lovelace said. The project was completed by the San Francisco-based IP Networks Inc., which worked with Pacific Gas and Electric Company to install fiber optic cable on PG&E's poles and towers -- technically making PG&E the owner of the cable. The route follows PG&E's existing right-of-way from the Cottonwood sub-station near Redding through both the Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity National forests to Eureka and the Humboldt Bay area. Not only does the line provide redundancy, it also allows service connections to places in eastern Humboldt and southern Trinity counties that were either under-served or had no service. According to a press release, providers like 101 Netlink will now be able to connect communities like Wildwood, Mad River, Ruth and Bridgeville, offering service to 527 rural households over a 218-square-mile area. The total cost for the project is $14.4 million, of which $5.7 million was provided by the California Advance Services Fund. This fund was created to provide under-served areas with universal service. It's supported by the public through a surcharge rate on revenues collected by telecommunications carriers.Sean McLaughlin, executive director of Access Humboldt, said the public financing component of the project is of particular interest to his nonprofit, which was hooked up to the second cable on Friday through 101 Netlink. Access Humboldt focuses on providing residents with access to broadband and other media outlets in order to promote an informed public.McLaughlin said he hopes places like libraries, schools and community centers will be able to have free access to this second line.
