MGTS to invest 50 billion rubles in Moscow GPON network by 2014
Russian wireline operator Moscow City Telephone Company (MGTS) plans to invest 50 billion rubles into the development of a network built using Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology by 2015, the company's Marketing Director Roman Plyachenko said late Tuesday.MGTS plans to invest its own funds into the project, as well as to attract the funds of its parent company, major mobile operator MTS, and other partners, Plyachenko said.MGTS expects about 3.6 million households to be able to connect to the company's GPON network by the end of 2014, Plyachenko said, adding that at present the company's GPON user base amounts to about 600 subscribers.MGTS launched a project to develop fiber optic broadband networks via the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology in May. GPON technology is expected to enable Internet connection speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. The operator currently provides broadband services mainly via the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology. The number of MGTS' wireline broadband subscribers amounts to more than 336,000 users, according to the company's data.MGTS is a major fixed-line operator in Moscow providing services to more than 4.4 million subscribers.

Swisscom, EWB conclude new fibre-optic agreement in Berne'
Swisscom and Energie Wasser Bern have reached an accord on amendments to the partnership agreement for fibre-optic expansion in the city of Berne. The amendments were required in the wake of the negative report from the Competition Commission (ComCo). Certain clauses in the agreement have been removed and/or amended, meaning that the expansion of Berne's fibre-optic network can now proceed rapidly and without delay.Energie Wasser Bern and Swisscom moved significantly closer together in the course of the follow-up negotiations, allowing them to make substantial amendments to the agreement in a very short space of time and push ahead with the construction of Berne's fibre-optic network. The clauses on both investment protection and layer 1 exclusivity were completely removed. Both partners are now able to offer passive, unlit fibre-optic cable. In removing these two clauses, both partners have complied with the key requirements of the ComCo Secretariat. The mechanism for compensation payments was also clarified. It will kick in at the earliest once basic connection has been completed. Swisscom and Energie Wasser Bern are investing more than CHF 170 million in fibre-optic expansion in Berne. Around one-third of households in Berne will already have access to the fibre-optic network by the end of the year. Both partners reviewed the agreement in the wake of the report published last September by the Secretariat of the Competition Commission on the partnership agreements. The review was necessary because the Secretariat's final report raised questions over key elements of the partnership model. The negotiations between Swisscom and other municipal partners are still ongoing.

FINLAND,INDONESIA : Indonesia under-sea fiber link gets huge capacity boost
Telkom, Nokia Siemens Networks deliver world's longest repeater-free 40G channel submarine link. A 354 kilometer under-sea link in Indonesia, critical to the country's international connectivity, has been upgraded by Nokia Siemens Networks. PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom), the largest telecom operator in Indonesia, now benefits from bandwidth of 40 Gigabits per second (40G) per channel on its JaSuKa undersea cable between Dumai and Dangas, while reusing existing assets. Nokia Siemens Networks provided its optical networking equipment to deliver the world's longest 40G link deployment without intermediate amplifiers. With currently four 40G channels - or wavelengths of light - in operation, the link's maximum information carrying capacity has been increased over 16 times. The link carries fixed and mobile voice and data traffic from PT Telkom and other major operators of Indonesia, many of them employing elements of Nokia Siemens Networks' Liquid Net architecture. "This initiative is part of our vision to develop the Nusantara Super Highway to provide true' broadband to 90% of capital districts across the Indonesian Archipelago by 2015. We are upgrading our terrestrial network to 40G to cope with the increased demand for bandwidth-intensive applications and services. The JaSuKa undersea cable is critical for international connectivity and we felt it was time to increase its capacity too," said David Bangun, executive general manager of Telecommunication Infrastructure Division at PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia. "Nokia Siemens Networks proposed a solution that made the most of our existing investments, delivering a high quality, cost-effective and reliable 40G network on time." "Indonesia is witnessing a rapid uptake of broadband services. With ever-increasing wireline and mobile broadband penetration and the roll-out of new services, operators need to ensure round-the-clock connectivity for end users," said Salman Zafar, head of PT Telkom customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. "By investing in the optical undersea link that carries international telecoms traffic, whether it's mobile or fixed, PT Telkom is well prepared to meet the increase in demand." Nokia Siemens Networks provided its dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution, comprising the hiT 7300 optical network platform, which is part of the company's Liquid Transport architecture. The hiT 7300 platform aims to provide cost savings by either adopting no dispersion compensation (DCM-free) techniques on new fiber or simply by utilizing the operator's installed DWDM network infrastructure. The latter option enables operators to benefit from higher capacity without the costly and time-consuming fiber measurement required by conventional systems.
