LightPointe intros carrier-grade gigabit optical wireless bridge
LightPointe, a manufacturer of free space optics (FSO) and millimeter-wave backhaul products, has introduced a new point-to-point optical backhaul system. The AireStrata G contains new features aimed at businesses, carriers, and government agencies, including simultaneous four-beam transmission and reception with auto-tracking, and flexible fiber-interface options to suit 4G/LTE telecom, data, and video networks.LightPointe says FSO technology is enjoying a renaissance in the backhaul sector, due to ever-increasing congestion in radio frequencies, the ability to deploy worldwide without licensing delays or costs, and dramatic increases in performance and reliability associated with fourth generation optical technology. The company also claims that the AireStrata G is virtually impossible to intercept, which makes it ideal for financial, medical, government, military, and other sensitive applications."The AireStrata G adds several features that make the links more flexible and easier to operate in a multitude of networks," said Heinz Willebrand, president and CEO of LightPointe. "The AireStrata G builds on the success of our FlightStrata Series, which has been proven in the most demanding enterprise and carrier applications around the world. With the AireStrata G, we've added multiple fiber and copper interfaces, an integrated and user-programmable Layer 2 Ethernet switch, an advanced integrated in-band or out-of-band Web browser and SNMP-based management platform, and high-quality German optical-grade lenses. Aside from carrier applications, the AireStrata G can be deployed in private networks, from hospitals to school systems to military theater of operations, where it is essential that transmission be undetectable."LightPointe also unveiled an upgrade kit to help customers transition their legacy FSO bridges made by MRV Communications to LightPointe's fourth generation FSO and hybrid optical-radio products, often without requiring a new mount or realignment.

Yenista Optics releases ultra-narrow tunable filter
In the development of next-generation 100-Gbps transmission systems, the need has emerged for extremely narrow tunable filters used in the investigation of new modulation formats and their sub-bands. Yenista Optics says it has responded to this need by developing an ultrafine option for its XT range of optical tunable filters. This option reduces the minimum filter bandwidth to 32 pm (4 GHz) at 1550 nm.Yenista’s ultrafine option provides a higher selectivity to its flat-top filters, the XTM-50 and XTA-50. The option offers bandwidth adjustability from 32 pm (4 GHz) to 650 pm (80 GHz) and edges of 800 dB/nm – the steepest available on the market, the company asserts. In the standard version, these values are 50-800 pm and 500 dB/nm respectively. The filters operate in the 1480- to 1620-nm wavelength range and have very low dispersion and loss characteristics, Yenista says.David Heard, Yenista Optics’ sales and marketing manager for North America says, "Yenista’s filters are designed for the most demanding applications. Our new ultra-narrow filter will meet the needs of engineers developing new transmission technologies and modulation formats such as OFDM."The filters along with the whole range of Yenista Optics’ test equipment will be showcased from January 24 to 26 2012 at Photonics West, booth number 4022, in San Francisco, California.

Xilinx orders Centellax 32G stressed serial BERT for device characterization
FPGA developer Xilinx has ordered several Centellax SSB32J Stressed Serial BERT test and measurement instruments for device characterization, Centellax reveals.David Ferguson, principal characterization engineer at Xilinx, chose the Centellax stressed serial BERTs after what Centallax says was “a thorough evaluation of the competitive offerings.”“Our evaluation clearly showed that Centellax had the best performance and the best price,” Ferguson told Centallax. “We are very happy to be associated with your excellent instrument.”William Sitch, vice president of sales at Centellax, says he’s found a high degree of traction for the SSB32J in the market because of its ability to meet both performance and affordability requirements in lab and manufacturing applications. “You almost never see the same instruments in R&D and on the test floor; usually the models sold to R&D are too expensive to build into five or ten production test lines,” he explains.Sitch adds that Centellax’s Shenzhen-based service and support office has proven a differentiator with customers who use offshore production lines in China.
