Qtel Fibre brings FTTH Internet to Qatar
Telecom service provider Qtel has launched commercial services on Qtel Fibre, bringing FTTH connections to residential customers. After months of installation and development, the service is now live for customers in Qtel Fibre zones, with work ongoing to extend the service to customers across the country in the months ahead, the company says. His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Thani, chairman of Qtel, said, "Today is the start of a new era of information access and greater convenience for our customers. The nationwide fiber network will provide the foundation for our nation’s ongoing progress towards the 2030 vision, and the growth of the knowledge-based economy."To date, Qtel Fibre has been installed in more than 16,000 homes across Qatar, and new connections are being added at the rate of approximately 1,500 per week. The operator says Qtel Fibre will cover the whole of the country by 2014.Qtel will deliver special packages over FTTH with speeds of 1 Mbps, 10 Mbps, 50 Mbps, and 100 Mbps.  A new Mozaic TV se¬rvice over fiber, including time-shift and HD services, will also be launched.

Optelian buys Versawave Technologies with eye on 100 Gbps
Optical transport systems developer Optelian says it has acquired Versawave Technologies Inc. of British Columbia, Canada. Versawave makes high-bandwidth gallium arsenide-based optical modulators with patented polarization-modulation technology. The acquisition provides Optelian with an in-house source of 100-Gbps technology.Terms of the deal were not disclosed.Versawave began life in 2001 as JGKB Photonics Inc. and raised Series A financing in 2002. JGKB launched Versawave as a new product division focusing on modulators as well as design, engineering, and manufacturing services in 2005. Versawave also assumed marketing of JGKB’s other products. Investors included Greenstone Venture Partners, Dow Chemical Corp., Venture Coaches, Growthworks, and Business Development Bank of Canada. The company went through a restructuring in July 2006. It has produced modulators for 40-Gbps and higher applications.“Our acquisition of Versawave is very much a part of our core strategy of continuing to manufacture in North America and being as vertically integrated as possible to provide our customers with very cost-effective solutions and short lead times,” said Optelian CEO David Weymouth.“Versawave brings exceptional technology for 100 Gbps and will accelerate Optelian’s growth into the next generation of highly integrated photonic systems,” continued Weymouth.Optelian says that Versawave, led by Hiroshi Kato, will continue to operate at its current Vancouver facility as a division of Optelian.

H3G installs 100 Gbps in Austrian mobile backbone network
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it is supplying Austrian mobile operator H3G with 100-Gbps technology for its backbone network. H3G and Alcatel-Lucent are installing the coherent transmission technology via an in-service upgrade.H3G Austria’s network will now benefit from 100-Gbps coherent optical technology via Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1626 Light Manager (LM). The 1830 PSS and 1626 LM will enable H3G to support a mix of 10G, 40G, and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means its existing optical infrastructure can be upgraded and expanded as needed.Matthias Baldermann, CTO of H3G parent 3 Austria, said, “Due to the rapid growth in 3G mobile broadband we are facing new challenges for our data network. Additionally, the introduction of LTE will increase the need for capacity. With Alcatel-Lucent’s help we will now have the most powerful data transport network in Austria, which will play an important role in maintaining our position as the leading provider of mobile data services. Also, because we are able to add these new capabilities to our existing network, we are able to move quickly to expand our services offerings without incurring a huge expense.”
