Openreach launches Optical Spectrum Access service with ADVA Optical Networking gear
Openreach, the infrastructure division of BT Group, has launched a new Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) service using optical transport equipment from ADVA Optical Networking. Part of Openreach’s Optical Spectrum Service (OSS) portfolio, OSA is a network connectivity offering targeted at UK enterprises. The OSA service provides dedicated single or resilient point-to-point optical fiber links throughout the UK. With a route distance of up to 103 km, the service accommodates a range of interfaces and uses the same low-latency technology deployed in many of the world’s leading financial trading networks, Openreach and ADVA say. The service rides on a fiber-optic network built using ADVA’s FSP 3000 WDM system.“The response to the FSP 3000 introduction has been exceptional,” said Jon Hurry, MD, Strategy, Commercial, Portfolio & Policy, Openreach. “Since the pre-launch of this service we’ve collaborated with a range of communications providers, whose customers are expecting dramatically more from their networks. Scalability and protecting their investment is at the heart of our customers’ strategy; they need to transport increasing amounts of data across greater distances more securely and faster than ever before. OSA meets those criteria. Today’s launch marks a milestone for U.K. businesses seeking to position their networks as a competitive advantage.”“This is an incredible time to be involved in U.K. networks,” commented Alistair Swales, senior vice president, U.K. sales, ADVA Optical Networking. “In less than one month we’ve seen over 200 design requests from customers interested in the new OSA service. This is simply unparalleled. Our R&D teams are working closely with Openreach to ensure this new service fulfils its promise and takes UK enterprise networking to previously unattainable heights. For today’s businesses and their mission-critical data, OSA is an imperative.”

Avago demos CEI-25G-LR compliant SerDes in 28-nm
Avago Technologies (Nasdaq: AVGO) says its 25-Gbps Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) core in 28-nm process technology has demonstrated compliance with the Common Electrical Interface (CEI) standard for 25G Long Reach (LR). The CEI-25G-LR compliance makes the chip a natural choice for 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) equipment design applications. The company will demonstrate the 25G SerDes cores in backplane applications at the DesignCon 2012 exhibition from January 31 to February 1. The embedded SerDes cores are often integrated in ASICs within equipment designs for networking, computing, and storage applications.“This compliance is not only another first for our SerDes cores, but it marks a significant step forward in the march to 100G Ethernet Infrastructure,” said Frank Ostojic, vice president and general manager of the ASIC Products Division at Avago. “As part of the push toward 100G, Avago is planning to use our 25G SerDes as the basis for future standard products. Capable of driving 5 meters of copper cabling at low power, the 25G SerDes is suitable for a range of applications and is now available to a larger group of customers.”Avago says it has integrated more than 400 SerDes channels on a single ASIC. The 28-nm Avago SerDes cores feature a “unique” decision feedback equalization (DFE) architecture. This DFE architecture results in low overall power, best-in-class data latency, and best-in-class jitter and crosstalk tolerance, Avago asserts.

IP fiber network spurs fourth quarter revenue for Allstream
MTS Allstream of Canada is touting the success of its IP fiber-optic network expansion. The service provider says it signed 46 new customers for IP-based services in the fourth quarter of 2011 alone."Our sales progress speaks to the continued popularity of IP-based services in the business telecommunications market in Canada," said Dean Prevost, president of Allstream. "We look forward to transitioning into the new year with the same momentum."The success reflects the success of Allstream’s fiber network rollout strategy. The company connected 299 buildings with fiber in 2011, including 75 in the fourth quarter. Allstream now reaches 2,388 buildings with fiber as of December 31, 2011. Its IP fiber network stretches 30,000 km.New customers in the fourth quarter of 2011 include Ad knowledge, Caltech Surveys, TEOPS Canada Corporation, dys architecture, Trispec Communications, Heathbridge Capital Management, Vivonet Canada, IBI Group, Voyer Marketing & Associés and World Trade Group (North America).
