AT&T wins regulatory approval to buy Qualcomm spectrum

AT&T Inc said late on Thursday that it won regulatory approval to buy wireless spectrum from U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm Inc, a move that would

boost the company's 4G network.

AT&T is buying 700 megahertz (MHz) airwaves for about $1.93 billion, with the aim of countering criticism over iPhone service quality and

competitive threats from rivals like Verizon Wireless.

"This spectrum will help AT&T continue to deliver a world-class mobile broadband experience to our customers," Bob Quinn, an AT&T senior

vice president, said in a statement.

The companies expect to close the transaction in the coming days, AT&T said.

French govt to get €3.5bn for 4G mobile licences

The French government will generate EUR3.5 billion from the auction of fourth-generation mobile network licenses, a spokeswoman from the

energy minister's office said Thursday.

"The auction was a complete success," she said.

The EUR3.5 billion figure includes additional fees related to the licenses.

Earlier this month, France's telecommunications regulator, Arcep, said it had received bids for 4G licenses in the 800 megahertz frequency

band from Bouygues Telecom, Free Frequences, Orange France and SFR.

The four companies, which have been already been awarded 4G mobile licenses in the 2.6 gigahertz band, submitted applications to bid for

frequencies in the 800 MHz band by a Dec. 15 deadline.

Bouygues Telecom is co-owned by French building-to-broadcasting giant Bouygues, which holds 89.5%, and advertising group JC Decaux

Holdings, with 10.5%. Orange France is unit of France Telecom and SFR is part of French entertainment-to-telecom conglomerate Vivendi SA.

Free, which is owned by French telecommunications and Internet company Iliad SA, is expected to launch its first mobile offers in the

coming weeks.
