VPIsystems upgrades Photonic Design Automation suite
MARCH 23, 2010 -- VPIsystems has announced Version 8.5 of its Photonic Design Automation suite VPItransmissionMaker and PIcomponentMaker. Version 8.5 provides new modeling features, improved usability, and design process and data analysis enhancements.Version 8.5 offers capabilities for BER estimation of systems with DmPSK-type modulation formats, statistically balanced generation of m-ary random symbol streams, and modeling for WDM-PONs, OFDM systems, and dynamic optical networks.Among the usability features of Version 8.5 are improved Search and Quick Find functionalities, enhanced control of multiple (possibly remote) simulation servers, and improved data visualization and analysis features of VPIphotonicsAnalyzer.VPIcomponentMaker Active Photonics provides new modeling supporting the design of Photonic Integrated Circuits, namely new models for passive waveguide and EAM sections.Paul Morton, CEO and founder of Morton Photonics, says: “Our team has been using VPIcomponentMaker Active Photonics since 2008 on multiple [Department of Defense] research and development programs. It has served us well in the simulation of novel active photonic devices, and has been used in the early design and optimization of a number of devices.”Version 8.5 will be available for public release in April 2010. The latest edition is on display at OFC/NFOEC 2010 booth #927.

Luxpert Technologies announces XFP, 80-km SFP+, single channel EDFA
MARCH 19, 2010 -- LuXpert Technologies of Korea has announced three new products ahead of OFC/NFOEC. They include a 10-km XFP optical transceiver, an 80-km SFP+ optical transceiver, and a single channel miniature EDFA.The DLXP-x31xx7-3G 10-km XFP is the first of a family of transceivers to be offered by Luxpert Technologies. The multi-rate module operates from 9.95 to 11.3 Gbps and supports SONET/SDH, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, and 10-Gigabit Fibre Channel standards. It offers a power consumption of less than 1.6 W.Samples will be available in July 2010, with production beginning at the end of 2010.The DLXP-x55xxD-3G 80-km SFP+ features an optical link budget of 24 dB and a typical power consumption of 2.5 W. The DLXP-x55xxD-3G module complies with ITU-T G.959.1 P1L1-2D2 optical standards. Samples will be available in July 2010 with production beginning at the end of 2010.The LXM-AMPY Miniature EDFA features a 65x4x10-mm footprint, less than 1.5-W power consumption, and an intelligent command interface accessible via RS-232 or I2C for control and monitoring. The LXM-AMPY can be used in a booster, line, or pre-amplifier configuration.“The Miniature Low-Cost Single Channel EDFA can be a key building block in system and subsystem applications where a compact low-power footprint is required, such as ROADMs and 40G transmitters and receivers,” said Leo Byun, CEO of Luxpert Technologies. “Our history of designing optical subsystems has allowed us to shrink the size and power while not compromising quality or performance.”Samples of the miniature EDFA will be available in April 2010 with production beginning in June 2010.

Oclaro unveils family of 50 GHz spacing wavelength selective switches
MARCH 18, 2010 -- Oclaro Inc., a provider of optical components, modules, and subsystems to the telecom industry, added the XTLS 4x1 50 GHz Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) to its portfolio. This new WSS module complements Oclaro's existing 2x1 and 9x1 50 GHz WSS family to fit a broadening spectrum of ROADM applications, says a company representative. By employing 50 GHz, WSS customers are able to double the switching capacity of their networking systems."We are seeing an increased demand for 50 GHz spacing WSS products to support higher capacity optical networking systems," says Dr. Krishna Bala, executive vice president of Oclaro's WSS Division.  "By exploiting a common optical platform we can satisfy our customers' requirements for different granularities of WSS at both 50 GHz and 100 GHz spacing."The new family of XTLS 4x1 50 GHz Wavelength Selective Switches are the latest addition to Oclaro's portfolio of 50 GHz spacing WSS module products. These products further enhance Oclaro's ability to support high-speed optical signals cascading through multiple ROADM nodes. The modules are based on Oclaro's field-proven optical platform with more than 50 million device hours of network deployment. These new WSS show Oclaro's commitment to the industry's shift to 50 GHz spacing for higher traffic carrying density.
