EXFO expands PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer feature set
EXFO Inc. (Nasdaq:EXFO) (TSX:EXF) has added features to its PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer to expand its utility from the lab environment to the manufacturing floor. The new PSO-200 capabilities include time-resolved error vector magnitude (EVM) analysis, which EXFO developed to enable fast and precise identification of transmitter impairments. (For more on time-resolved EVM, see the recent webcast, "Testing Approaches for Manufacturing of 100G DP-QPSK Transmitters.") The optical modulation analyzer also provides bit-error-rate (BER) and symbol-error-rate (SER) computation in a gearbox designed to enable users to provide the patterns and sequences used in their transmitter to get precise mapping of errors, ITU-T and IEEE-based compliance mask tests for OOK modulation formats, as well as constellation and time-resolved EVM masks for phase-modulated signals.EXFO also now offers an optional external local oscillator input to support the requirements for homodyne characterization. The feature can come into play when testing transmitters using lasers with larger linewidth such as 40G DQPSK modules with coherent instruments like the PSO-200."These new features leverage the unique capability of the PSO-200 to recover time-domain information without additional signal processing, providing simple, yet powerful performance information on 40G/100G DP-QPSK transmitters," said Étienne Gagnon, EXFO's Vice-President, Wireline Division and Corporate Marketing.

Tektronix adds support for 16GFC Fibre Channel, 14 Gb/s FDR Infiniband standards
Tektronix Inc., a manufacturer of oscilloscopes, announced a new optical sampling oscilloscope module for the Tektronix DSA8200 Digital Serial Analyzer Series for characterization and validation testing of 16GFC Fibre Channel and 14GB FDR Infiniband communications standards. Both Fibre Channel and Infiniband standards are designed for high-bandwidth applications and devices, such as high-performance super-computing clusters, large databases, data center interconnect and migration, and solid-state disks or memory arrays. The new 80C14 module is the industry's highest-performance testing system for compliance verification from 8.5 Gb/s through 14.063 Gb/s."These latest optical standards bring higher performance and lower power consumption per bit over previous generations, driving demand and putting a premium on time to market," says Brian Reich, general manager, Performance Oscilloscopes, Tektronix. "With the new 80C14 optical module, we are moving quickly to give equipment suppliers the comprehensive test capabilities they need to deliver products based on the new standards."The 80C14 optical sampling module is the newest member of the DSA8200 platform, supporting both singlemode and multimode fiber with RMS noise performance of 3 uW, dynamic range of 19 dBand Optical sensitivity to -14 dBm, providing leading signal integrity performance for increased mask margin, resulting in better yields. The new module includes optical reference receivers that are ITU- and T11-compliant for evaluation and characterization of the recently completed 16GFC Fibre Channel standard and 14 GB FDR Infiniband channels.Finisar Corp. recently demonstrated the industry's first FDR Infiniband active optical cable able to transmit 56 Gb/s data across four lanes of traffic at 14 Gb/s each. Behind the scenes, Finisar used the Tektronix DSA8200 platform to complete performance verification testing."The new Fibre Channel standard represents a significant step forward toward meeting the bandwidth and link distance requirement of high-performance computing and large database applications," says Tony Pearson, director of product line management, Finisar Corp. "With its high signal integrity, wide dynamic range, and support for the latest standards, the Tektronix DSA8200 plays an important role in helping Finisar be first to market with our 16GFC SFP+ and QSFP transceivers that meet leading-edge networking demands."

Centellax to preview FC-16, DQPSK, and short-haul 100G BERT
Centellax Inc. plans to preview an upcoming bit-error-rate test system (BERT) for 16X Fibre Channel (FC-16), 40-Gbps DQPSK (2x22G), and 100G (4x28G) at its booth during OFC/NFOEC.The SSB32 2011 that will be on display at booth #1815 is designed to offer affordable pattern generation and error detection capabilities for applications at data rates up to 32 Gbps. The pattern generator and error detectors are also available in SSB17 models with hardware tuned to operate up to 17 Gbps for 16X Fibre Channel designs. The SSB32 consists of a controller and pattern generator and error detector remote heads. Centellax says its modular architecture enables the user to put the pattern generator and error detection near the device under test, eliminating long cables that can degrade signal quality – a factor that is especially important at 32 Gbps, the company adds. The pattern generator and error detector remote heads operate from 2 to 32 Gbps in a single band with no gaps or missing data rates, Centallax says. They generate and test full rate patterns directly without the need for external multiplexers and delay matching often used in other modular BERT systems, the company adds. They also are designed to produce a selection of PRBS pattern lengths, along with a large selection of common telecom, datacom, and clock stress test patterns including K28.5, CJPAT, CJTPAT, etc.Centellax calls the signal fidelity in the eye “outstanding.” Meanwhile, such output parameters of amplitude, offset, and termination voltage are user settable.“This next-generation BERT offers industry-leading 32-Gbps performance in a compact form factor at a surprisingly affordable price,” asserts Steve Sekel, Centellax vice president of product management. “The full-rate operation eliminates the complexity and calibration needs of multiplexed sub-rate techniques used in older generation card modular products. Coupled with our Signal Integrity Studio software, the solution is extremely easy to set up and use.”
