Anritsu rolls out BERTWave BERT software for analysis of active optical cables, direct attach cables
Anritsu Co. has announced a pair of software packages for its MP2100A BERTWave series of bit-error-rate testers (BERTs) for testing active optical cables (AOCs) and direct attach cables (DACs) in half. With the new software, the MP2100A BERTWave provides jitter decomposition analysis, S21 transmission characteristics, and waveform simulation on ACO and DAC for half the cost, Anritsu.The Jitter Analysis Software package is designed to separately measure each type of jitter, such as TJ, DJ, RJ, DDJ, and DDPWS, while the Transmission Analysis Software is engineered to support analysis of S21 transmission characteristics and waveform simulation. Anritsu says that by installing both software packages in the MP2100A, technicians can take advantage of high-speed post-simulation waveform analysis as well as the standard BER, eye pattern, and eye mask measurements of the MP2100A. All of these measurements are made with a high degree of efficiency, due to the MP2100A’s advanced linear equalizer, Anritsu asserts. The MP2100A BERTWave series is an all-in-one BERT, pulse pattern generator, and sampling oscilloscope. BERTWave now supports all digital high-speed communications standards, including Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, USB, SAS/SATA, and 10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet. The Jitter Analysis Software and the Transmission Analysis Software are $9,355 each.

LightCounting on 2011: Cheer up
Yes, 2011 has seen macroeconomic uncertainty, debt crises, natural disasters, and unprecedented late season collapses by the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves. But market research and analysis firm LightCounting points out that, at least for the optical components and subsystems industry, a few good things have happened as well that bode well for the future.First, says LightCounting, revenues for the top 12 service providers has risen this year by 7.5%, a step in the right direction after two years of flat lining. While such carriers still remain cautious about spending their new-found wealth, LightCounting points out that increasing bandwidth demands will continue to pressure these service providers to loosen their purse strings. Once the economic environment settles down and revenues grow further, LightCounting expects capital expenditures (capex) to rise faster than these revenue increases. Even with the overall cautious approach to capex, LightCounting expects carrier spending to have increased 5% in 2011.This uptick in capex has benefited networking companies and their optical technology suppliers. LightCounting says network equipment sales will grow by more than 10% this year, while optical transceivers sales will be up 8% by the time 2011 ends.Signs point to continued growth over the next three years, LightCounting believes. The company remains confident in its previous forecast that the optical transceiver market will grow at an 11% CAGR from 2012 to 2015. It does foresee a few changes from its prognostications earlier this year, however:The fact that power-efficient 10GBase-T development fell another 6 months behind schedule will widen the window of opportunity for suppliers of optical interfaces and direct attach cables. Sales of 10-Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ modules should benefit particularly.On the other hand, LightCounting has lowered its projections for sales of 8G and 16G Fibre Channel transceivers, mainly because of extended life cycles of previous-generation (4G) products.40-Gbps DWDM transponders also will not sell as well as LightCounting originally believed, as system vendors will turn toward in-house manufactured interfaces as they have initially for 100 Gbps.Meanwhile, the adoption prospects for 100 Gbps in datacenters, including short-reach transceivers, will be better than previously believed.Sales of FTTx components have grown strongly this year due to demand in China, but such demand levels probably aren’t sustainable. LightCounting foresees a potential “hard landing” in 2012 or 2013.

Tektronix offers 33-GHz oscilloscope series
Fresh off of acquiring optical modulation analyzer provider Optametra (see "Tektronix buys Optametra for optical modulation analyzer technology"), Tektronix Inc. has unveiled a new real-time oscilloscope series that dovetails nicely with Optametra’s technology. The company has unveiled four new DPO/DSA70000D Series oscilloscopes designed to provide real-time sampling rates up to 100 GS/s on two channels and – for those looking to measure coherent receivers for DP-QPSK and similar modulation formats using the Optametra hardware – 33-GHz analog bandwidth on four channels.Tektronix says the series models for 25- and 33-GHz bandwidths provide the industry’s highest level of measurement accuracy. Leveraging IBM’s 8HP silicon germanium (SiGe) chipset, Tektronix engineers have integrated high-speed bipolar transistors directly on the same die as standard CMOS to enable what the company asserts is the fastest rise time on multiple channels of any real-time oscilloscope on the market. The capability enables accurate characterization of sub 20-ps rise-time signals.Features of the new oscilloscope series include:Real-time sample rate performance of 100 GS/s on two channels and 50 GS/s on four channels, both at 33 GHz bandwidth.Input sensitivity at 62.5-mV full scale (6.25-mV/div) for better visibility of low amplitude signaling common in LVDS-based standards.Fast time to answer with quicker access to data, measurement analysis including 8b/10b serial decode, fast waveform data transfer within the instrument, and new custom region-based qualification using Visual Trigger capability.Updates to Tektronix’s DPOJET Jitter & Timing Analysis toolset to support jitter separation of Bounded Uncorrelated Jitter (BUJ). Separation of BUJ from other random jitter sources can be accomplished in DPOJET for more complete analysis.DataStore, a new data processing pathway, enables easier use of third-party tools like MATLAB or Microsoft .NET languages.For signal access, Tektronix provides up to 33-GHz bandpass support through its TekConnect channel interface, enabling the use of Tektronix 2.92-mm adaptors and probes that feature small probe heads.For optical modulation analysis in coherent receiver designs, the series provides 33-GHz bandwidth on four channels with 10 terasamples equivalent time sampling. This level of bandwidth on four channels provides more accurate assessment of the four phases used in DP-QPSK via the Optametra Coherent Lightwave Signal Analyzer and opens the door for measurement of even more complex modulation formats such as 16QAM.“The new Tektronix 33 GHz oscilloscopes will give designers the ability to understand the effects of advanced modulation techniques on bit error rates, even as speeds continue to increase,” said Rob Marsland, former president of Optametra and now a senior manager in the Oscilloscope product line at Tektronix. “Using these scopes, bit rates exceeding 240 Gbps can now be analyzed for the first time with a high degree of confidence.”Worldwide shipments of the DPO/DSA70000D models will begin in Q4 2011. The four available models include DPO73304D and DSA73304D at 33 GHz bandwidth and DPO72504D and DSA72504D at 25 GHz bandwidth. Pricing starts at $202,000 U.S. MSRP.
