It’s critical to choose a proper type of optical transceiver for your device, but there are too many factors need to concern about, so we are going to help you to go through the necessary factors so that you would know what should be taken into consideration.

1. Be clear of your network circumstance.
You need to make sure what kind of network you are deploying. Let’s take an example of Gigabit Ethernet, there are four standards including 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX, 1000BASE-CX. Once you choose the standard, you choose the transmission medium as well. 1000BASE-T is designed for existing Category 5 wiring, 1000BASE-CX is designed for STP(Shielded Twisted Pair), and the rest are designed for optical fiber, but you still need to pay attention to the wavelength and fiber modes.

2. Check the fiber mode you need.
Multimode fiber(MMF) and singlemode fiber(SMF) are the basic fiber types that have been using till now. Multimode fiber is best designed for short transmission distances, and is suited for use in LAN systems and video surveillance. Single-mode fiber is best designed for longer transmission distances, which is used in applications that need bandwidth that will travel over long distances.

3. Be sure either you need Full-duplex or Half-duplex.
Some chips will only use full-duplex configuration. Selecting switches, HUBs, or transceivers with half-duplex mode may cause loss and conflict. Only choose full-duplex unless you think that your application can support half-duplex. Nowadays, Ethernet interfaces on the switch operate at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps, or 10,000 Mbps and in either full- or half-duplex mode.

4. Fully understand the meaning of basic parameter.
The image below is a SFP+ LR, the label on the case contains information like brand, Stock Keeping Unit(SKU), form type, wavelength and transmission range. In this case, the brand is 10Gtek, SKU is AXS13-192-10, form type is SFP, wavelength is 1310nm, transmission range is 10km. All of these parameters should be compatible with the requirement of device.
