ETSI tests GPON "plug and play" interoperability
July 10, 2009 -- The latest European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI; search Lightwave for ETSI) Plugtests testing event focused on the interoperability of GPON. This, the eighth event on the topic, successfully confirmed "plug and play" interoperability among various vendors' products, ETSI asserts. The event was organized in June by ETSI and the Full Service Access Network Group (FSAN; search Lightwave for FSAN) with support from France Telecom, Telecom Italia, and test tool vendors. The European Commission served as sponsor. Its focus was on verifying correct implementations of the ITU-T Optical Network Termination Management and Control Interface (OMCI) Implementers' Guide. The event was hosted by ETSI at its headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, France, and brought together 14 GPON equipment and IC device vendors. Using detailed test case descriptions provided by FSAN operators, the event enabled these vendors to run numerous test cases among each other, resulting in 55 half-day test pairing sessions in a period of one week.Beyond these pairing sessions that are regularly used at Plugtests events, a new test concept was successfully introduced for the first time. "Blindfold pairing" was employed to create a more "real world" situation for these particular products. Taking on the role of network operators, independent testing experts configured the optical network termination (ONT) themselves through the OLT using the OMCI layer without vendor intervention, as will be the case in practice, and then carried out the tests. Blindfold pairing permitted a further 60 short pairing test sessions, each lasting a maximum of half an hour. These tests also confirmed the "plug and play" capabilities of the vendors' implementations. The participating vendors were Alcatel-Lucent, Broadcom Corp., BroadLight, Calix, Cambridge Industries, Comtrend, ECI, Ericsson, Huawei, PMC-Sierra, RAD Data Communication, Transwitch, Zhone Technologies, and ZTE."The Sophia-Antipolis event showed that plug and play GPON interoperability is almost fully achieved," said Regis Coat (France Telecom), chair of the FSAN Interoperability Task Group. "Thanks to the strategy FSAN operators have built in 2008, GPON vendors have now clear guidance to reach the target. We will be able to confirm the good maturity of the GPON technology again during the ninth test event which will take place in China in November 2009".Michael Shaffer, FSAN OMCI Implementation Study Group co-ordinator, added, "This event has shown that OMCI implementations can now support a full range of Ethernet based services in a mixed vendor environment. It goes well beyond the simple Ethernet pipe interoperability that has been demonstrated using other technologies."

JDSU releases remote PON test system
JUNE 18, 2009 -- JDSU (search Lightwave for JDSU) has introduced what it claims is the first centralized remote PON test system, which tests point-to-multi-point networks from the central office (CO) using a web browser. It is a complementary application to the JDSU Optical Network Management System (ONMS) that includes point-to-point fiber monitoring and GIS-based outside plant documentation. The system supports service providers migrating to PON by delivering a fast and cost-effective method of turning up and restoring IPTV and other broadband services to meet users' quality of experience expectations, says JDSU."It's a competitive environment and communications service providers must find ways to cost-effectively deliver bandwidth-intensive applications like IPTV while meeting high quality standards," explains Enzo di Luigi, general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "PON makes it possible to service multiple subscribers at a competitive price, and the JDSU centralized remote PON test system helps reduce operating expenses even further by limiting the amount of support needed for field turn-up and maintenance."Accelerating demand for IPTV and online video is introducing new network complexities and quality assurance challenges. In the United States alone, according to research firm comScore (search Lightwave for comScore), U.S. consumers watched 16.8 billion online videos in April 2009, a 16% sequential increase from 14.4 billion in March.Traditional troubleshooting methods for services like IPTV require time-consuming coordination between the CO and field personnel using portable devices to conduct tests. The test system enables a technician in the field to troubleshoot any leg of the PON by accessing an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) in the CO through a mobile phone or web browser.According to the company, the ability to perform single-ended measurements without having to involve a second person at the CO provides faster service turn-up and service restoration and reduces the number of field personnel needed to maintain the PON system. The JDSU ONMS also enables network operations center (NOC) personnel to quickly check the current status of a fiber without having to be trained in the use of an OTDR.

Kingfisher intros KI9000 Pocket Fiber Testers
AUGUST 3, 2009 -- Kingfisher International (search Lightwave for Kingfisher) has introduced a new range of "pocket fiber testers" aimed at customers requiring inexpensive, practical, versatile optical fiber test gear.Kingfisher says the instruments are simple, pocket-sized, able to be securely clipped into a front shirt pocket. The instruments are designed to be highly ruggedized, moisture and drop resistant and have a long battery life. They feature a sunlight-readable display and come with a Kingfisher's standard three-year warranty (extendable to seven years). The product line includes the KI 9600 Pocket Optical Power Meter, designed to be suitable for the majority of basic testing needs. With interchangeable connectors, multi-wavelength referencing, multi-fiber ID tone detection, and display hold, the unit is versatile while remaining simple to use, Kingfisher asserts. The KI 9600 receives 2% traceable calibration at nine wavelengths. The instrument features Kingfisher's new general use InGaAs detectors, which suit all 600- to 1650-nm applications with a fiber core diameter up to 200 microns, according to the company. Several alternate detectors are available for other applications, including high power detectors, large area detectors, a wavelength selective detector (for PON use), and Si and Ge detectors. The KI 9800 Pocket Fiber Source is designed to test singlemode, multimode, or POF systems (see "Proponents hope home is where the plastic is"). With interchangeable connectors, one to three wavelengths, multi-fiber ID tone generation, and connector repeatability of <0.1 dB, the KI 9800 source offers versatility and accuracy. The instrument is suitable for a variety of applications including singlemode/multimode (LED and laser), fault-finding, continuity, and POF testing.
