IEEE EPON over coax standards work kicks off
Those in the optical communications industry who believed an eventual move to 10G EPON would trigger massive fiber builds for cable MSOs might want to reconsider. The IEEE has announced work on a new physical layer (PHY) standard to run EPON protocols transparently over coax distribution networks.As its name implies, the newly formed IEEE 802.3 EPON Protocol over Coax (EPoC) Study Group could open the door for cable MSOs to use EPON to boost the bandwidth capacity of their existing hybrid fiber/coax networks. Such a capability would obviate the need to run fiber to the home (FTTH) or business to take advantage of EPON’s benefits. It also would enable service providers of all types to use EPON in multi-tenant and multiple dwelling unit (MDU) applications to provide services directly to individual units without first converting to a copper-based technology, such as VDSL2, or running fiber within the building.“Operating EPON transparently over coax is a significant step forward. It will help to transform the industry by greatly simplifying operator networks while simultaneously offering subscribers easy and efficient access to dramatically increased bandwidth,” said Howard Frazier, chair, IEEE 802.3 EPoC Study Group and senior technical director, Broadcom Corp.Broadcom has already brought a DOCSIS EPoC chip to market that is being used for equipment aimed at the Chinese market. Meanwhile, EPoC was mentioned several times on the SCTE Cable-Tec exhibition floor in November as a potential successor or complement to DOCSIS in cable MSO networks. The IEEE notes that EPON has enjoyed wide deployment, particularly in Asia. In fact, technology developers have shipped more EPON ports than any other IEEE 802.3 technology defined in the last 10 years, the IEEE asserts.The IEEE therefore expects EPoC to prove popular. “This effort is an industry pull, not a technology push,” said David Law, chair, IEEE 802.3 Working Group and distinguished engineer, HP Networking. “We are pleased with the enthusiastic reaction we’ve received from industry who have turned to the IEEE specifically to investigate the potential for using the IEEE 802.3 EPON protocol on existing coaxial cable networks.” The IEEE 802.3 EPoC Study Group initially will do just that – study. It will investigate market demand, network compatibility considerations, and available technologies for an EPoC PHY specification. The study group will meet for the first time in January 2012, with the expectation that results from the investigation could be completed by July 2012.

Epsilon Telecommunications deploys BTI Systems’ Dynamic Optical Layer
Epsilon Telecommunications, a global Ethernet and SDH connectivity provider, has deployed BTI Systems’ recently announced Dynamic Optical Layer capabilities on its 40-channel network in Singapore. The company also has plans to roll out the technology throughout its London metro network next year, according to Epsilon CTO George Szlosarek.BTI Systems unveiled the Dynamic Optical Layer capabilities last August. The product family includes a ROADM-on-a-blade card and a DWDM line amplifier card, tied together with the company’s proNX Service Manager. BTI asserts that new service provision then becomes a matter of putting the right kind of card in each network node. If the node is expected to add or drop wavelengths, it gets a ROADM card; otherwise, it gets an amplifier card.In an interview with Lightwave, Szlosarek praised the Dynamic Optical Layer technology for its ability to simplify service planning and engineering. He said service turn up has shrunk from four to six weeks to about a week, typically. Epsilon now will be able to better respond to customer demands for rapid bandwidth provision and lower costs, he added.Epsilon has deployed the Dynamic Optical Layer capabilities in all of its major co-location facilities in Singapore. The company next has its eyes on its London network, which includes approximately 30 sites connected in mesh fashion. Szlosarek says he expects to begin the deployment next year and gradually install the technology over a three-year period.The service provider also operates networks in Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong. However, there currently are no plans to deploy the Dynamic Optical Layer cards in these networks, Szlosarek said.Epsilon is not only the first announced customer for the Dynamic Optical Layer cards but served as a lead customer whose input helped shaped the offering, Szlosarek and BTI sources revealed. Szlosarek said that Epsilon has been working with BTI Systems since 2005 to expand its metro capabilities, particularly with an eye towards boosting its support of connectivity to cable landing stations.

ADTRAN adds OTN, mini-ROADM to Optical Networking Edge family
Looking to further assert itself within the packet-optical transport space, ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) has added a miniature reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (mini-ROADM), a multi-service ITU-T G.709 Optical Transport Network (OTN) Switchponder, and the use of tunable pluggable optics to its Optical Network Edge (ONE) capabilities. The ONE family comprises a set of line cards that add packet-optical transport capabilities to ADTRAN’s flagship Total Access 5000 platform.The new features form the latest steps in ADTRAN’s march towards a packet-optical transport platform “right-sized” for edge network applications, Mano Nachum, packet-optical networking product line manager within ADTRAN's Carrier Networks Division, told attendees last week at a media and analyst event held at the company’s headquarters in Huntsville, AL. For example, both the mini-ROADM and OTN Switchponder are single-card offerings. The mini-ROADM comprises a wavelength-selective switch (WSS), EDFA amplifiers, optical monitoring, and auto power balancing elements. While a carrier would require two such cards to support 2 degree capabilities (which is the limit of ADTRAN’s initial capabilities; 4-degree technology is on its way), that’s still fewer cards than most other platforms would require, Nachum asserted.Meanwhile, the OTN Switchponder integrates an OTN switch with a DWDM transponder on a single card. The remotely configurable card will deliver OTN mapping, switching, aggregation, and transport capabilities in an “any-service to any-port” fashion, Nachum said.As part of the new features, ADTRAN also has increased the service capacity of the ONE-enabled Total Access 5000. Access, aggregation, and transport service capacity now tops out at 44 channels of 10 Gbps, although the system is architected to be scalable to 88 channels of 10 Gbps. Nachum said that while he could envision requirements for support of data rates greater than 10 Gbps at some point in the future, 40 and 100 Gbps probably aren’t necessary for the majority of prospective customers in the edge network niche where the ONE capabilities will play.That certainly appeared to be the case with Consolidated Companies Inc., an independent telco in Nebraska whose CTO, Jason Axthelm, attended the event last week and commented on the appeal of the new capabilities, particularly the mini-ROADM. While ROADMs are often thought of as platforms that make it easy to reconfigure network paths, Axthelm says that he appreciated the reduction they provide in network engineering and provisioning requirements.
