BT to increase core network capacity at 21CN
BT Group PLC (LSE: BT.A) is getting ready for the 100-Gbps era and beyond, judging from the news that it’s picked Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) to supply packet-optical transport equipment for its core 21st Century Network (21CN).Ciena has been a strategic supplier to BT since 2003. The company provides high-capacity transmission and switching equipment, which serves as the foundation for much of BT's existing network infrastructure (see "BT announces 21CN suppliers").Now BT plans to install intelligent optical transmission infrastructure based on Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical processors. Ciena’s coherent technology supports 10G and 40G/100G wavelengths working side by side."Our long-standing relationship with Ciena has enabled us to bring targeted innovation to market ahead of our competition," said Neil J. McRae, chief network architect at BT. "This deployment underpins BT's product range and in particular supports growth in Wholesale Broadband Connect and Managed Ethernet Access Service. With this new infrastructure, we are continuing to invest for the future by increasing core network capacity, at eventual speeds of 400G, and simplifying management to push our network and services to the next level of performance." Ciena's network implementation for BT will follow an aggressive timeline, with the commercial roll-out scheduled to begin by end of calendar 2011. The initial roll-out will include a single photonic layer covering BT's network throughout the UK.Ciena's technology will deliver ROADM functionality as well as integrated OTN switching with advanced control plane functionality, which will enable BT to optimize support of a wide range of traffic types, and deliver groomed wavelength services to its enterprise customers (see “Ciena expands packet-optical transport line”).By deploying products from across Ciena's transport and switching portfolio, including 6500 and 4200 platforms, BT can take advantage of Ciena's multi-layer, multi-domain management suite – OneControl. The unified management system will be integrated into BT's existing operations support systems, offering service lifecycle control and monitoring for the entire network.

Surf Telecoms expands its network with Transmode
Surf Telecoms, a UK telecommunications carrier, is deploying a new backbone infrastructure using WDM optical equipment from Transmode Systems AB. The deployment will increase the carrier's existing fiber-optic network capacity and extend its reach from the South West into the West Midlands.Surf Telecoms' deployment of Transmode's optical networking systems began in 2011 and will be split into a two-phase build. The project starts with an upgrade of Surf's existing infrastructure in the South West and Wales. This is followed by a new network across the Midlands, which will support increased customer demand and the predicted growth of network traffic in the region."This new network from Transmode will enable us to future-proof our infrastructure so that we can rapidly respond to our customer's needs, provision new services and increase bandwidth on demand," said Richard Doble, design and policy manager at Surf Telecoms. "In making our selection of vendor it was refreshing that Transmode's approach was consultative. Not only did they help design the network, they gave good advice about how to scale it without over engineering and so keeping our costs down."The new network was jointly designed to provide a highly flexible national infrastructure at low cost with new protected 40 channel rings in South Wales and the Midlands. The additional deployment will add over 650 km to Surf's existing network footprint. The iWDM equipment chosen includes Transmode's TM-Series Multi-Service Access Solution, the Layer 2 Ethernet Muxponder (EMXP) as well as reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) to ensure that Surf is able to deliver high-speed services over a state-of-the-art network without incurring long-term operational costs.Doble commented "With [this upgrade], we are in a position to be able to offer our customers new services while helping them to migrate from E1 to Ethernet and IP services. The network will enable Surf Telecoms to provide highly flexible Ethernet and wavelength services to customers across the South West, South Wales, the Midlands and up to Lincolnshire."

AT&T, China Telecom agree to share networks
China Telecom and AT&T have signed a strategic framework agreement to cooperate and share infrastructure for the benefit of multinational companies that want to use their services in both regions. The agreement builds upon the long-standing relationship between AT&T and China Telecom, and the success of their previous joint venture, Shanghai Symphony Telecommunications Co., Ltd. – the first Sino-foreign  lecommunications services joint venture in China. The two companies are working to:Simplify intercompany business processes and put in place tools to help both companies operate more efficiently.Provide bilateral Wi-Fi roaming as an additional access capability.Connect the China Telecom and AT&T MPLS-based IP networks in the United States, to provide the same world class global experiences for Chinese multinationals as they grow outside China.Expand AT&T's existing IP-VPN service in China to allow broader national reach, greater technology choice, enhanced performance, and reduced total cost of ownership, as multinational companies continue to expand their business in China.Explore jointly deploying an expanded suite of VPN-based services, as well as advanced services like telepresence, managed hosting, cloud-based services, network integration services, and enterprise mobility.Explore the possibility of providing mutual support in other regions of the world."Our customers have told us that enhanced communication services between China and the rest of the world is a key factor for improving their competiveness and global expansion," said Roman Pacewicz, AT&T business solutions senior vice-president of marketing and global strategy.  "Developing this strategic framework agreement will allow customers with operations in China to take advantage of the same type of business transformational services they have in other parts of the globe.""Through the strategic collaboration between China Telecom and AT&T, China Telecom will be able to enhance its end-to-end service capabilities via AT&T networks in the US. We will better serve our China-based and Asian customers in the US," said Kou Fengda, managing director of China Telecom's global business.
