Swiss network combines FTTH, environmental control
Draka, part of the Prysmian Group, says that its Swiss partner Drahtext AG has completed the first phase of a rural community fiber-optic network that combines fiber to the home (FTTH) with environmental control for the village of Huenenberg in Zug, Switzerland. Part of a showcase renewable energy project, the network provides both broadband services to community residents a supports the supply and control of a substantial part of the energy demands of Hünenberg, Draka says. The village biogas plant, one of the biggest plants in Europe, provides 15% of the community’s energy requirements. Its gas turbine, powered by biogas, will provide the community with nearly 600 kW of energy (300 kW of electrical and 300 kW of thermal energy).Draka JetNetXS blowing technology helped deploy the underground fiber infrastructure running alongside the biogas distribution network over a total network length of 4.5 km. Despite the challenge of jetting fiber through microducts over distances up to 5 km, the fiber-optic network has been installed rapidly and successfully, Draka asserts. The network also can be easily expanded to meet future community energy management requirements, the company adds. “This is an entirely self-financed renewable energy project in which fiber interconnectivity plays a key role,” explains Roland Kurmann, chairman of Drahtex. ”It’s a cooperative venture which brings community stakeholders together to invest in a future-oriented energy approach for the citizens of Huenenberg.”At the plant, the fiber connections enable every component in the biogen heating plant to be fully automated, with remote control availability from various sites. All processes within the plant can be monitored and controlled at any time.

Swisscom halts FTTH effort
In response to concerns expressed by the Swiss Secretariat of the Competition Commission (ComCo), Swisscom has put its fiber to the home (FTTH) plans on hold while it decides how to proceed.Swisscom has partnered with local utility firms for its planned roll out (see, for example, “Swisscom, Energie Wasser Bern agree on Berne FTTH/FTTB network”). The partnerships include sharing the costs of the deployment; once the multi-fiber infrastructure is installed, the utility would own the cable, which it would make available to Swisscom as well as other providers to meet ComCo’s competition requirements. However, ComCo expressed reservations about the fact that Swisscom would be able to establish minimum prices that the utilities could charge for certain services. The Swiss incumbent would potentially exercise undue influence on its competitors pricing structure, ComCo decreed in a report. In response Swisscom announced that it “feels compelled to carefully examine all agreements concluded to date with its partners in order to determine whether the partnership model can be adapted at reasonable business risk. New partnership agreements that have already been negotiated cannot be signed for the time being, as the changed situation calls for a rethink of the underlying partnership model.”Swisscom called the clauses that give it the price fixing power “elementary key aspects of the partnership model.” It also criticized the regulatory authority for condemning the clauses “on strictly legal grounds rather than waiting to see how the actual market dynamics play out.”The carrier says it will consult with its utilities partners to determine if the agreements can be saved. If not, Swisscom said it might have to roll out FTTH infrastructure on its own – an outcome that would significantly slow the deployment of FTTH in Switzerland, the carrier asserted.

Wightman Telecom chooses ADTRAN for FTTH
ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says that Wightman Telecom, which is both an incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) and a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) serving communities in southern Ontario, Canada, will use ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments throughout its service area. The ability of the Total Access 5000 to support both copper- and fiber-based service delivery was important, according to sources at Wightman Telecom.“We needed a flexible platform that would provide an evolutionary path and maximize the ROI of our copper base while allowing us to transition to FTTH without a forklift upgrade. We needed a vendor that would provide a robust product with an aggressive roadmap and long-term support. ADTRAN and its Total Access 5000 were the perfect solution,” said Tom Sullivan, vice president and general manager of Wightman Telecom. “Because of the flexibility of this next-generation platform, we will realize operational expense savings and increased revenue streams as we continue to roll out triple-play services to our customers. Today, we are exploiting our existing copper infrastructure, retiring an end-of-life switching platform and continuing our evolution to FTTH. We see FTTH as the end game and ADTRAN with its Total Access 5000 provided us the best path to achieve this over the long term.” Wightman Telecom announced its intention to roll out FTTH services in 2008. It has deployed FTTH in Harriston, Listowel, Mount Forest, Palmerston, and now Hanover.
